Supergirl Director Reveals Exact Runtime for the Next DCU Epic
Supergirl will fly at a tight 110 minutes including credits, Craig Gillespie says.
So, we’re officially in Supergirl countdown mode. With the movie now just a month out, there’s been a steady drip of new details for DC’s next big release — and the latest bit is sure to get fans talking, depending on how you feel about your superhero movies’ run times.
Here’s the quick setup: Supergirl is the cosmic follow-up to last year’s Superman reboot, with Milly Alcock taking the lead as Kara Zor-El in her first solo adventure. If you missed it, this is the one that borrows its story from 'Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow', a comic that actually has a strong fan following (unlike a lot of older DC source material). Instead of the usual ‘learning to be a hero’ stuff, Kara’s running around space, hunting for an alien outlaw who supposedly holds the cure for her four-legged best friend, Krypto. Yes, the dog is a major plot point. I’m not making this up.
Runtime at Warp Speed
Director Craig Gillespie let this slip in an interview: 'Supergirl' clocks in at about 110 minutes. That’s 1 hour and 50 minutes, credits included. To put it another way, you don’t need to block out your whole afternoon. Gillespie says they’re 'basically at the finish line' with post-production just about wrapped up — think final tweaks to VFX and the sound mix. The director also claims, 'I’m very excited for everybody to see it,' and that he 'feels really great about it.' Basically, he’s confident the movie works just fine at under two hours.
If you’re eyeing that number and thinking it feels short for a superhero epic, you’re not alone. It’s about 20 minutes less than James Gunn’s recent Superman (which ran 2 hours and 10 minutes), and it’s actually the shortest DC movie since 2020’s 'Birds of Prey.' Some fans get nervous when these run times drop below two hours, worried about plot speedruns or scenes getting left on the cutting room floor. There was a similar reaction last summer when 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' runtime came out at 1 hour and 55 minutes, followed by not-so-great fan feedback about obvious edits and missing material (including deleting John Malkovich’s villain completely).
But before you get out your stopwatch, let’s keep this in perspective. Not every superhero flick needs to be an endurance test. Plenty of crowd-pleasers — 'The Incredibles', 'Deadpool', even 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse' — all get the job done well under the two-hour mark. So, shorter doesn’t automatically mean worse.
How Does Supergirl Fit Into the New DCU?
- Spin-Off Status: 'Supergirl' is a direct spinoff from the new 'Superman', and if you sat through the credits on that one, you already saw Alcock’s Kara Zor-El pop up at the very end.
- Bigger Picture: James Gunn has been throwing around the phrase 'Superman Saga', which kind of telegraphs that Supergirl’s arc won’t be a one-and-done. She could be key to whatever’s coming up in 'Man of Tomorrow' (set for 2027, if you’re keeping score).
- Post-Credit Scene?: Gillespie was asked directly, had a laugh, and dodged the question: 'I can’t tease that. Sorry.' You know what that usually means.
Cast Details
Milly Alcock is front and center as Supergirl/Kara Zor-El. More cast details are expected soon — so expect the full lineup to drop as we get closer to release. And yes, Krypto the dog makes the journey too.
If you’re in the camp that likes bite-sized superhero movies or you’re just here for cosmic dog medicine, Supergirl’s looking like an interesting left turn for the DCU. As always, stay tuned — and if anything especially strange or juicy comes down the pipeline, you’ll get it here.
