Before David Harbour donned the badge as Chief Jim Hopper, the Duffer Brothers had a two-time Emmy winner in mind — and he passed. They just revealed who it was in a new interview.

Here’s a fun bit of Stranger Things trivia that I’ll admit caught me off guard. So, everyone knows David Harbour has basically become the face of Chief Jim Hopper, baseball cap and all, right? Well, turns out, he nearly didn’t land the role. In fact, he wasn’t even the first name in the frame — or the second, depending on who you ask. Apparently, the gig first went to someone with a couple of Emmys already on his shelf, who then turned it down. And the reveal came straight from the horse’s mouth, via a podcast, no less.

From Nearly-Made TV Star to Actual TV Star

The story came out on the 'Happy Sad Confused' podcast when David Harbour himself piped up. He actually sent in a video to the Duffer Brothers — the creators of Stranger Things — still a bit in the dark about how he managed to become Chief Hopper in the first place. To his credit, Harbour was pretty up front about it all, saying:

'I’m pretty sure I was second choice, and I don’t know who I was second choice to. Maybe I was third choice? But would you please answer the question of how I came to be cast as Chief Hopper, and who had to say no to allow me to do that wonderful, incredible role.'

Pod host Josh Horowitz guessed aloud that maybe it had been Josh Brolin who was originally tapped, seeing as Brolin and Harbour get on well. But Matt Duffer quickly quashed that story:

'No, it was Billy Crudup, which is a very different — like, everything happens for a reason, right? So it’s like, once it kind of clicks into place… But yeah, Billy Crudup passed. I don’t think he was doing much TV at the time.'

Quickest Audition in Hawkins History

So yes, Billy Crudup (the bloke from Almost Famous and The Morning Show) got offered the role but turned it down. Apparently, TV schedules weren’t high on his to-do list. His pass essentially opened the door for Harbour, who landed the career-defining spot on what would become Netflix’s crown jewel. Even weirder — Harbour’s audition reportedly barely happened. Here's how Ross Duffer described it:

  • One of the casting directors thought Harbour might fit Hopper.
  • Harbour came in and read, but the Duffers weren’t even there. They just watched his taped audition afterward.
  • He nailed it in a single take. No faffing around, no callbacks — just one go, and that was enough. Done. Instant Hopper.

The rest, as all of Hawkins now knows, is history. Harbour has gone on to pick up a couple of Emmy nods and turned Hopper into one of the great TV coppers: gruff on the outside, fairly battered inside, and – to be honest – pretty much the show’s emotional centre.

So, next time you’re rewatching Stranger Things, you can try picturing Billy Crudup stumbling through the Upside Down. But let’s be real — it’s tough to imagine anyone else grumping around Hawkins like Harbour does.
