Stranger Things’ Maya Hawke lands a lead role in the live-action Magic: The Gathering movie
A major Netflix name is boarding Legendary and Hasbro’s fantasy movie, the clearest sign yet their ambitious live-action franchise plans are properly kicking into gear.
Progress on Magic: The Gathering’s long-gestating leap to live-action proper is starting to look less like wishful thinking and more like an actual production now. The latest? Netflix’s own Maya Hawke—who a fair few will recognise from Stranger Things—is apparently set to nab a lead part in Legendary and Hasbro’s planned film adaptation.
That’s according to Deadline, who say Hawke isn’t just another name in the rumour mill; she’s reportedly been the top pick for producers from the word go. No word yet on the specific character she’s down to play, or even if it’s a familiar Planeswalker, so all those lore obsessives keen to nitpick the casting will just have to wait.
Magic: The Gathering’s live-action film has added Stranger Things star Maya Hawke in a major role.
This is the first properly solid casting news for the project in a while—not another bit of vapour, but something with a name attached and (fingers crossed) a signing pen somewhere in the mix. The production already has an experienced team at the helm, but getting Hawke on board is a real statement of intent, especially if the producers genuinely built the project around her involvement. Not every Netflix darling gets hand-picked for this sort of tentpole gig right out of the gate.
The only thing we don’t have yet is an official confirmation of Maya Hawke’s exact role or much about the plot, but sources suggest she’s right at the heart of it all. That’s as specific as anyone outside of a Hasbro boardroom or a Legendary conference call is getting for now.
