Peter Jackson just thrilled Lord of the Rings fans, revealing Tolkien superfan Stephen Colbert as co-writer on the second new film now in development.

You might want to sit down for this one—Peter Jackson just casually dropped a big Middle-earth update, right on the official Warner Bros. YouTube channel. If you thought we'd already seen every possible Tolkien adaptation, well, apparently not. Not only is 'The Hunt for Gollum' heading our way, but Warner Bros. and Jackson are cooking up a second new Lord of the Rings film—with a pretty unexpected name attached to the script.

'The Hunt for Gollum': Filling in the Tolkien Gaps

First up: 'The Hunt for Gollum' is set in that tricky spot between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring—so, yes, it's one of those Tolkien plot threads that the movies glossed over, but that the hardcore fans love debating. The basic gist: Aragorn is on a mission to find Gollum before that sneaky little guy can spill any secrets about the One Ring to Sauron. The story itself is pulled from Tolkien's notes and appendices, so we're deep in the lore weeds here.

If you're wondering about the cast—it's a mix of old faces and seriously heavy hitters:

  • Elijah Wood is back as Frodo Baggins
  • Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf
  • Andy Serkis, because obviously, is Gollum
  • And, wild card: Kate Winslet is joining the ride (character still unknown)

A Surprise Behind the Scenes: Stephen Colbert, Tolkien Superfan, Now Also Screenwriter

Now, here's where things take a turn for the bizarre (or hilarious): Halfway through the update video, Peter Jackson brings out a guest to help announce something big. Enter Stephen Colbert. That's right—the talk show host who's never hidden his Lord of the Rings obsession is not just a hype man here. He's actually co-writing the next film in the saga.

The new project is going by 'Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past' for now. Colbert is teaming up with Philippa Boyens and Peter McGee for the script, with production coming from Jackson's WingNut Films and Spartina Industries.

Here's the official synopsis (and yes, it goes deep):

'Fourteen years after Frodo's passing, Sam, Merry, and Pippin set out to retrace the first steps of their adventure. Meanwhile, Sam's daughter, Elanor, digs up a long-hidden secret and decides to figure out how the War of the Ring almost went south before it even started.'

That's either going to be every Tolkien fan's dream come true, or spark a million debates online. (Probably both.)

Back in New Zealand, Back with the Old Crew

For anyone feeling nervous about these new films, Elijah Wood gave fans some comfort at DesertCon last year. According to him, this really is about getting the 'band back together'—Jackson, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, plus much of the original production team. They'll be shooting in New Zealand again, so expect that classic Middle-earth vibe to stay intact. Wood sounded pretty pumped:

'It feels like getting that old machine up and running again with all of the right people. There’s gonna be some fun bits that I think people are gonna be stoked about.'

To sum up: We're in the middle of a full-blown Lord of the Rings renaissance, with Peter Jackson, Stephen Colbert, and the old gang all powering up once again in New Zealand. Who had that on their 2024 bingo card?
