Maul strikes back: Lucasfilm Animation has officially renewed Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord for season 2.

If you thought Star Wars was finished wringing drama out of Darth Maul’s wild saga, guess again. Disney+ hasn’t even started airing the new animated series Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord yet, and Lucasfilm has already decided there’s more story left in Maul’s horns. Yep: season 2 is officially happening, with Dave Filoni back at the helm. I’ve got all the details, plus some surprisingly revealing comments from the creative team about Maul’s headspace—and let’s just say, the guy is not okay.

What’s the Deal with Shadow Lord?

Here’s the setup: We’re dropped into Maul’s life while he’s rebuilding his criminal empire—far, far away from the Empire’s gaze. (Honestly, this guy just doesn’t know how to quit.) But he’s not going at it alone. Enter a young Jedi Padawan, feeling pretty jaded about the whole Jedi experience. Naturally, Maul decides this disillusioned apprentice could be a handy recruit for his endless quest for revenge. If you’re looking for classic ‘villain finds his own sidekick’ drama, this series sounds ready to deliver.

Who’s Voicing Who?

The voice cast is stacked, so here’s the rundown:

  • Sam Witwer as Maul (the guy’s played Maul for so long, at this point I think he is Maul)
  • Gideon Adlon as Devon Izara
  • Wagner Moura as Brander Lawson
  • Richard Ayoade as Two-Boots (which might be the most Star Wars name ever)
  • Dennis Haysbert as Master Eeko-Dio Daki
  • Chris Diamantopoulos as Looti Vario
  • Charlie Bushnell as Rylee Lawson
  • Vanessa Marshall as Rook Kast
  • David W. Collins as Spybot
  • A.J. LoCascio as Marrok
  • Steve Blum as Icarus

The first two episodes hit Disney+ on April 6. So if you’re marking your streaming calendar, that’s your date.

More Maul, More Problems

Some Star Wars fans might be groaning ‘But we already know how Maul’s story ends!’, thanks to Star Wars: Rebels. And yeah, we do—but Filoni and company are clearly betting there’s more mileage left in Maul’s journey to rock bottom.

In an interview, Filoni broke down Maul’s mindset like this:

'Maul is afraid, and power is the only way that he knows to really overcome this fear of his. This fear of being insignificant, of being forgotten, of being a nothing.'

That’s about as blunt as it gets. Meanwhile, Sam Witwer gave his own take: imagine a guy who trained for the Olympics, never made it, and now spends all his time obsessing over what could have been. ‘He’s the guy who peaked too early and is thinking, Oh, I could have been and I should have been… And if he were more wise, he would be able to figure out a way through that. But unfortunately, he was not trained to have that reflectivity.’ In plain English, Maul is kind of a burnout with a lightsaber and a grudge.

And if you’re feeling bad for him, head writer Matt Michnovetz is here to remind you—don’t. ‘He’s this kind of tragic figure who is constantly doomed to repeat his mistakes. We have some empathy for him, but he’s a bad figure. His moral judgment is not the best. He’s determined to achieve his goals through whatever means necessary: manipulation, devious tactics, cruelty in some cases. But he’s a survivor. You got to hand it to him.’ So yes, he’s pitiful and horrible at the same time.

So, Should You Care?

Look, if you’re one of those people who never got enough Maul in the movies, or you just like your Star Wars with a side of messy villain development, this one’s for you. And if you thought this one-and-done season would tie it up? Sorry—season two is coming, so Maul’s story isn’t flaming out just yet.
