Hulk’s raw fury has long been missing from the MCU. With Spider-Man: Brand New Day on the horizon, fans may finally see the green giant unleashed as never before. Discover what’s in store for Bruce Banner.

Among the original Avengers, few would dispute that Hulk’s journey on screen has been the most underwhelming. Once celebrated for his unbridled rage, the character’s more recent appearances have left many feeling short-changed. While his involvement in the multiverse saga has been largely confined to She-Hulk, the arrival of Spider-Man: Brand New Day could mark a return to form for the not-so-jolly green giant.

Facing the Past: Trauma and Guilt Take Centre Stage

Marvel’s intentions for Bruce Banner appear to be shifting. According to semi-reliable scooper Alex Perez, the events of Brand New Day will see both Bruce and Peter Parker confronting the weight of their own regrets and emotional scars.

The events of Brand New Day are going to force both of these characters to come face-to-face with their own personal trauma and guilt over the events of their past as they come bubbling to the surface. And you have to think about what effect that can have on these two characters, particularly.

With Mark Ruffalo confirmed to reprise his role, there’s growing anticipation that audiences might witness the Hulk at his most volatile since the early days of the franchise.

Unleashing the Monster: Hulk’s Anger Revisited

Despite his reputation in the comics, moments of true, unchecked fury have been rare for Hulk since Age of Ultron. Brand New Day, however, seems poised to revisit this defining aspect. Perez suggests that the emotional turmoil experienced by Bruce could push him to extremes never before depicted in live-action.

For Hulk, it’s similar, except it unleashes a big green monster on the rampage, angrier than he’s ever been before. In previous iterations, Hulk, dare I say, shows restraint in the MCU? Even during the events of Age of Ultron when he was under the control of the Scarlet Witch, people were seriously injured and scared, but if I recall, he never killed anyone. In Brand New Day, he might get pushed to the point where he might just kill somebody.

Such a development would be a significant departure from previous portrayals, where, despite widespread destruction, casualties were always avoided.

The Elusive Solo Outing: Ruffalo’s Perspective

One persistent frustration for fans has been the absence of a proper standalone film for Hulk. The 2008 release did little to satisfy, and ongoing rights complications between Universal and Marvel have kept further solo adventures off the table. Mark Ruffalo himself has addressed this, noting,

Yeah, I’d love to have a solo Hulk movie. I don’t know if you know the story of that, but it’s not really owned by Marvel. It’s a Universal property. I don’t know if it’ll ever really come to be, honestly.

For now, all eyes are on Brand New Day and the next Avengers instalments to see whether the character will finally be given the spotlight he deserves.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set for release on 31 July 2026.
