Prepare for ludicrous speed: Spaceballs 2 launches April 23, 2027 from Amazon MGM Studios, arriving four decades after the original.

Well, this isn’t a drill. After decades of rumors, jokes, and Mel Brooks winking at the camera about possible sequels, Spaceballs 2 is actually happening—and it’s hitting theaters nearly forty years after the original. Amazon MGM Studios is officially rolling it out on April 23, 2027. Yes, you read that date right, and yes, you’re allowed to feel old.

What Exactly Is This Sequel?

The official description is a mouthful: 'A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film.' Obnoxiously self-aware? Sure, but it fits the Spaceballs DNA. So, this is pure sequel territory (not a remake), but expect a few new faces and, let’s be honest, probably a lot of jokes at the trend of endless franchise reboots.

Who’s Steering This Ship?

Josh Greenbaum—most recently known for his work on 'Will & Harper'—is in the director's chair. The script comes from Josh Gad, Dan Hernandez, and Benji Samit. That’s a mix of people with actual experience in both comedy and meta-humor, which should set the tone somewhere between a respectful follow-up and a gleeful roasting.

Cast: Old Favorites Meet New Faces

  • Bill Pullman returns as Lone Starr. Yes, he’s back after all this time, which might be the biggest surprise of the whole project.
  • Daphne Zuniga is also back as Princess Vespa, picking up her hair buns (or whatever they’re called in Mel Brooks’s universe).
  • Mel Brooks himself comes back as Yogurt—let’s all enjoy this legend whenever he shows up, especially at his age.
  • Enter: Josh Gad, Keke Palmer (honestly a great choice), Anthony Carrigan (yes, NoHo Hank from 'Barry'), and Lewis Pullman.
  • Lewis Pullman, in a move that basically writes its own meta-joke, will play the son of Lone Starr and Princess Vespa.

Early Buzz: Writers Feeling Confident

Josh Gad is already talking up the script. Here’s what he’s saying:

'Everybody who’s read it has been blown away. The process of working on this with and alongside Mel Brooks has been one of the highlights of my career.'

Maybe that’s the usual early hype, but hey, even the possibility of a Mel Brooks sequel script that 'blows people away' is huge.

Final Thoughts

I’ll be honest: I never really expected to see a Spaceballs sequel get to this stage. Reboots and forty-years-later sequels are everywhere, but Spaceballs is a weird beast—satirical, shamelessly referential, and entirely dependent on what random thing it decides to lampoon next. But with original cast AND Mel Brooks in the mix, this is one sequel I’m actually rooting for to live up to the insane legacy.

Mark your calendars (and may the Schwartz be with us).
