Sophie Turner Injured on Tomb Raider Set, Production Hits Pause
Tomb Raider hits pause after Sophie Turner suffers a minor on-set injury, briefly halting production on the highly anticipated live-action series as she recovers.
If you were hoping for a steady stream of updates from the new Tomb Raider series, you might want to hit pause yourself — at least for a bit. The show, which has Sophie Turner (yes, Sansa from Game of Thrones) suiting up as Lara Croft this time around, has had to halt filming because Turner took a knock during production. Nothing super serious, but enough to make Amazon call a quick timeout so she can heal up.
What Actually Happened?
Here’s the deal: During one of the latest days on set, Sophie Turner picked up a minor injury. Amazon MGM Studios put out a statement clarifying that Turner is fine, but they’re not taking any chances:
'Sophie Turner recently experienced a minor injury. As a precaution, production has briefly paused to allow her time to recover. We look forward to resuming production as soon as possible.'
So, nothing dramatic — just basic workplace safety. Anyone picturing Lara Croft climbing walls in a body cast, sorry, that’s not happening.
This Version of Lara Croft: What’s the Big Deal?
Amazon’s Tomb Raider kicked off filming on January 15, still without an official release date. In case you missed the noise last September, when Turner was announced as the new Lara Croft, fans were predictably thrilled and maybe even a little surprised (we’ve come a long way from the Angelina Jolie era).
Here’s a quick rundown of how we got here:
- 1996: The franchise starts as a hit video game. (Yes, that pixelated bun was legendary.)
- 2001: Angelina Jolie’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider makes a pile of money, mostly defying the curse of game-to-movie adaptations.
- 2003: Cradle of Life hits theaters. Not a disaster, but not Oscar season either.
- 2018: Alicia Vikander picks up the twin pistols for a reboot. Another winning box office.
- Next up: Live-action series at Amazon, courtesy of Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the mind (and face) behind Fleabag.
The Creative Team (and Their Hype)
Phoebe Waller-Bridge is in charge of the series. No pressure, Phoebe, but Lara Croft fandom can be intense — and based on what she’s said, the stakes aren’t lost on her:
'I’m so excited to announce the formidable Sophie Turner as our Lara alongside this phenomenal creative team. It’s not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving.'
Oh, and the supporting cast? Not too shabby: Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, Bill Paterson, and Celia Imrie. Easy to see why Amazon is betting big on this one — if they can get everyone back on set soon.
So, What Now?
Basically, filming is paused, but no reason to break out the flares (or bandages) just yet. The show hasn’t even announced a premiere date, so a short break for Sophie Turner to shake off a minor bump probably won’t make much difference in the grand scheme of things.
Keep your eye out for more updates — preferably ones where Lara Croft is dodging danger in-fiction, not on set.
