Seth Green’s Childhood Ordeal with Bill Murray Revealed
Seth Green recounts a distressing incident with Bill Murray backstage at Saturday Night Live, exposing a lesser-known side of the celebrated actor.
Bill Murray has long been celebrated for his roles in classics such as Groundhog Day, Ghostbusters, and Lost in Translation, earning a reputation as a versatile performer capable of both comedic and dramatic turns. However, his off-screen conduct has often been called into question, with stories surfacing over the years about his challenging behaviour on set. Notably, he once had a heated row with Lucy Liu during the filming of Charlie’s Angels, and more serious allegations have emerged, including accusations of sexual harassment. In one instance, he reportedly settled with a crew member after being accused of inappropriate conduct during the production of Being Mortal, which included straddling and kissing her without consent. These incidents are just a few among many that paint a rather unflattering picture of Murray’s interactions with colleagues.
Unsettling Memories from SNL
Even young actors have not been spared from Murray’s questionable actions. Seth Green, who began his career as a child, shared a particularly unsettling memory from his early days in the industry. Appearing on Good Mythical Morning in 2022, Green recounted an incident from when he was just nine years old, participating in a Saturday Night Live segment alongside Mary Gross. Murray, a former SNL regular, was hosting the episode that week. One might expect a seasoned performer to show kindness to children experiencing the backstage world of television for the first time, but Green’s recollection suggests otherwise.
Green described how he was sitting on the arm of a sofa backstage when Murray took issue with his choice of seat.
“He saw me sitting on the arm of this chair and made a big fuss about me being in his seat,”
Green recalled, adding that he found the situation rather absurd. Despite his mother’s suggestion to move, Green did not see the harm in his actions.
“He was like, ‘That’s my chair.’ Are you this much of a jerk? This rude to tell a nine year old to get out of your chair. What is this power play?”
A Disturbing Encounter
Instead of resolving the matter with a word or a simple request, Murray’s response was far from what one might expect from an adult. Green recounted how Murray physically intervened, acting more like a playground bully than a professional actor.
“He picked me up by my ankles. Held me upside down…He dangled me over a trash can and he was like, ‘The trash goes in the trash can.’ And I was screaming, and I swung my arms, flailed wildly, full contact with his balls. He dropped me in the trash can, the trash can falls over. I was horrified. I ran away, hid under the table in my dressing room and just cried.”
The experience left a lasting impression on Green, who described feeling utterly shocked and distressed by the encounter.
Behind the Public Persona
Such stories challenge the public’s perception of Murray as merely a mischievous comic. The accounts from colleagues and, in this case, a child actor, suggest a pattern of behaviour that is far from harmless. While audiences continue to enjoy his performances on screen, these revelations offer a glimpse into the more troubling aspects of his conduct away from the cameras.
