Keep an eye on Avengers: Doomsday’s Sandra Hüller — she’s suddenly a major player for next year’s Oscars, and it might not be just one category.

If you follow awards chatter or just like keeping tabs on who’s genuinely everywhere at the moment, Sandra Hüller is shaping up as the name to watch going into next year’s Oscars. This is less a case of ‘her time has come’ than ‘can anyone else get a look in?’, because by the end of this year she will have stacked up what’s frankly a ridiculous run of acclaimed roles across several huge films and genres.

Sandra Hüller is juggling lead and supporting Oscar runs for three separate films in 2026.

Sandra Hüller: In Everything Everywhere, All At Once

Let’s start with the basics. The 48-year-old German actress has been getting rave notices in Fatherland, a postwar black-and-white drama from Paweł Pawlikowski. She plays Erika Mann—that’s Thomas Mann’s daughter for anyone who paid even less attention in school than I did. Fatherland only came out last month (23 October 2026), but review buzz and her performance have already put Hüller forward for Best Supporting Actress at the 2027 Oscars, according to early trades chatter. Yes, it’s already time for those predictions.

But here’s where things get wild: Fatherland isn’t even her only major supporting campaign this year. Hüller is also being tipped for another nod in the same category for Project Hail Mary, the year’s big-budget sci-fi outing starring Ryan Gosling, and directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller. She plays Eva Stratt, a ruthless leader calling the shots while the planet’s on the line. Pretty much everyone came away saying she was, if anything, even chillier than the void of deep space.

New Roles, Old Tricks

To round things off, Hüller is throwing her hat into the Best Actress race as well, this time for a leading turn in Rose. This one’s a period piece from Markus Schleinzer, where she takes on the role of a disguised, enigmatic soldier wandering into a hermetic Protestant village in the 17th century. Critics are raving over this one too—even before it’s made it to general release, Rose already sits at a 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes, which is about as close to universal as you’re going to get until someone remakes Paddington, again.

If that’s still not enough range for you: Hüller turned up recently in Digger, Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s black comedy with Tom Cruise front and centre. She plays Emma, Cruise’s character’s half-sister, so presumably gets at least one glorious scene of quietly staring daggers across a table. She simply does not stop working.

Sneaking Into the MCU

Oh, and because it’s apparently a legal requirement now for every critically-acclaimed European to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Hüller will appear in Avengers: Doomsday this December (out 18 December 2026), directed by the Russos. As is standard, Marvel’s kept her exact character quiet—rumours suggest she might be related to Doctor Doom (either his mother or wife, or possibly something more magical—Latverian witches are a strong fan theory at the minute) but nothing confirmed. Basically, she’s about to be known to anyone who’s ever walked past a cinema, whether they’ve seen a single art film in their life.
