Hulu’s hit true-crime drama has lined up two franchise favourites to join forces — and the pairing’s a cheeky surprise.

If you thought Good American Family had run out of lurid real-life cases to pick over, think again. Hulu isn’t ready to let go of its true crime meal ticket just yet—Season 2 is pressing on, this time with a fresh pair of leads and a notoriously divisive American scandal at the centre. The streamer’s set on making the anthology approach stick, which is probably wise given how wild these cases keep getting.

More than 140 million hours of Good American Family have been streamed globally since March 2025.

Season one in review

The first series landed in March 2025, with Ellen Pompeo and Mark Duplass front and centre as Kristine and Michael Barnett. Not that they really stayed the main focus—the story infamously revolved around Natalia Grace, a Ukrainian-born girl with dwarfism who endured public scrutiny after her adoptive parents claimed she was actually an adult scam artist. Hard to forget, frankly. And if you were wondering how popular it was: Hulu and Disney+ swiftly renewed it, quite sensibly, after it clocked up a staggering 140 million viewing hours worldwide. Those are Netflix numbers, which is a feat for Hulu’s end of the crime docu-drama spectrum.

The Bobbitts step in

This year, it’s all about the Lorena and John Bobbitt case—one of those 90s stories that’s morphed into a cultural reference even for people who don’t know the details. Isabela Merced and Patrick Schwarzenegger have signed on to play the infamous couple, per Deadline. Merced’s just about everywhere lately (she’ll turn up in The Last of Us S2 and the new Superman too), while Schwarzenegger drew plenty of attention in The White Lotus’s third run for HBO. Hollywood’s next wave doing heavy-lifting on a classic tabloid case, then.

For those who didn’t grow up with newspapers full of it: in 1993, Lorena Bobbitt cut off her husband’s genitals while he slept, saying she’d suffered years of violent and sexual abuse. Both found themselves in court: John was acquitted of marital sexual assault, and Lorena was declared not guilty by reason of insanity. It split the public and the press, with everyone, predictably, having an opinion.

This isn’t the first attempt to put the Bobbitts on screen—there’s already Jordan Peele’s documentary series Lorena, and Lifetime’s more melodramatic I Was Lorena Bobbitt. Hulu’s version, though, will have a bit more access this time: Lorena Bobbitt (who now goes by Lorena Gallo) is consulting. That’s a change from last year, as Natalia Grace (subject of season one) wanted nothing to do with the series.

Katie Robbins, the creator, is still steering the ship. Pompeo, who led last season, is sticking around as executive producer but won’t be in front of the camera this time.

No word yet on exactly when Season 2 will land—Hulu’s holding that info back for now.
