As Outlander’s final season rolls out its first episodes, Sam Heughan and Caitríona Balfe reveal where they stand on revisiting Jamie and Claire after Season 8 — and the spin-off scenarios that could lure them back.

Well, here we are: Outlander is finally winding down after nearly a decade of time travel, heartache, and the never-ending saga of Jamie and Claire Fraser. Starz has already dropped the opening episodes of the eighth (and last) season, which is supposed to finish their story... you know, as much as anything ever gets truly finished in TV land.

Could Jamie and Claire Ever Return? Here’s What the Stars Say

Naturally, fans are desperate for more—and that means speculating about spin-offs. Would Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe ever put on their 18th-century costumes again? Both actors have weighed in, and—no surprise here—they’re not shutting the door completely.

As Balfe put it:

'I think we always say, never say never.'

Heughan didn’t expand much beyond echoing the same line: 'Never say never.' Classic actor dodge, but you can’t blame them. Still, it’s clear neither of them is itching to do just any Outlander side project. The show’s been their life for more than ten years, so if they come back, it apparently has to be for something that genuinely excites them.

Heughan did joke that if there is an Outlander spin-off, it’d be great to shoot it somewhere warm—say, Hawaii. Never hurts to angle for a little more sun after all those years in soggy Scottish weather. (Honestly, can you blame him?) Balfe was a little more serious about what’d tempt her: a great script and an actual reason for their characters to show up again. So, if you’re hoping to see Jamie and Claire in 'Outlander: Space Force,' you’ll be waiting a while.

Saying Goodbye After the Long Haul

Outlander’s final stretch of filming wasn’t exactly a cakewalk, either. Balfe described the last nine months on set as 'emotionally taxing,' mostly because she and Heughan were so determined to send the show off the right way. Stakes were high, nerves were raw, and everyone pretty much felt the weight of a generation of fandom.

As for Heughan, he admitted that he wasn’t ready to fully say goodbye once season 7 wrapped. But that’s hardly surprising since Outlander’s source material isn’t even finished.

The Book Series Isn’t Done (Which Is Kinda Wild for a TV “Finale”)

  • Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander novels started in 1991 and have been the backbone of the series since the jump.
  • Book 10 (“A Blessing for a Warrior Going Out”) will supposedly be the end—eventually.
  • As of now, there’s no release date on that final volume, so the show is closing shop before the story’s actually wrapped up in print.

So, to recap: Jamie and Claire might ride again, but the planets have to align—good script, logical story, and maybe a tropical beach or two. And if you’re waiting for the books to give you closure, settle in.
