Ryan Hurst Steps Into Kratos’ Boots for God of War Series
Prime Video’s God of War adaptation has chosen Ryan Hurst, the voice behind Thor in Ragnarok, to portray Kratos. The series will chart the journey of Kratos and Atreus as they honour Faye’s final wish.
Prime Video’s much-anticipated adaptation of the God of War franchise has finally named its leading man. Ryan Hurst, who lent his voice to Thor in the 2022 instalment God of War: Ragnarok, is set to take on the role of Kratos in the upcoming live-action series. Hurst, no stranger to the screen, is perhaps best remembered for his portrayal of Gerry Bertier in Remember the Titans and as Harry ‘Opie’ Winston in Sons of Anarchy, where he appeared across five series.
The God of War universe, which began its journey in 2005, now boasts a total of ten titles, including spin-offs and mobile entries. Over the years, the central figure, Kratos, has become a staple of the action-adventure genre, known for his relentless drive and formidable presence. The games’ narrative depth and the character’s unyielding nature have cemented his status as a gaming icon.
"The titular character of the entire franchise, Kratos is Spartan by birth, and a god by nature. Raised in a martial culture, he rose to command armies in service of his homeland until one day he made a fateful deal with Ares, the Greek God of War and lost his soul in exchange for being victorious in battle,"
reads the official description from Prime Video, offering a glimpse into the complex backstory that will underpin the series.
New Faces, Familiar Legends
The series will follow the journey of Kratos and his son, Atreus, as they set out to fulfil the final wish of Faye, their wife and mother. Their travels are as much about scattering ashes as they are about navigating the fraught relationship between father and son. Kratos, ever the warrior, attempts to instil a sense of discipline and strength in Atreus, while the younger tries to coax a more human side from his father.
This dynamic, central to the later games, promises to be a focal point of the adaptation. The interplay between the two characters, set against a backdrop of myth and legend, is expected to provide both spectacle and emotional heft.
Awaiting the Journey’s Start
Despite the excitement surrounding the casting, Prime Video has yet to announce when viewers can expect the series to debut. For now, fans of the franchise and newcomers alike will have to content themselves with speculation and anticipation.
In the meantime, those eager for a taste of what’s to come might find themselves revisiting the best that Prime Video currently has to offer, while keeping an eye out for further news on this ambitious adaptation.
