An action icon becomes a near-silent avenger in a ruthless new revenge thriller; the first teaser drops May 6.

If you know Alan Ritchson as the walking wall of muscle from Reacher, get ready for a serious big-screen detour. His next gig isn’t just another action flick; it’s a wild experiment in how much story you can tell without anybody actually talking. Motor City is finally locked for theaters, with a release date landing in July 2026—yes, it’s a wait—but some new details and a fresh image have just dropped, so let’s dig in.

Revenge, Minimal Words, and Maximum ‘70s Vibes

Motor City is set in—a shocker—Detroit, but specifically, Detroit in the 1970s, when cars were huge, music was loud, and your average crime boss was apparently a bit more stylish. Ritchson plays a working class guy whose crush on the wrong woman gets him framed by a nasty gangster. He spends years clinging to what’s left of his life in prison. As you’d guess, his top priority when he gets out: track down the person who ruined things and mete out a little classic vengeance.

Practically a Silent Movie

Here’s where it gets interesting: this thing is almost entirely wordless. We’re talking just a few lines of dialogue for the entire movie. Instead of people spelling everything out, the action is front and center—all choreographed chaos and, apparently, some heavy needle-drops on the soundtrack. If you love a good retro song, you’re in luck—Jack White (yes, that Jack White, Detroit’s own and a Grammy-winner) is building the musical backbone for all the revenge and chaos.

Who’s Making This and Who Else Is Along for the Ride?

  • Director: Potsy Ponciroli, who most recently did Old Henry (go watch it—it’s good)
  • Writer: Chad St. John
  • Main cast: Alan Ritchson, Shailene Woodley (as the woman everyone’s fighting over), Ben Foster, Pablo Schreiber, Ben McKenzie, Zoë Kravitz, Natasha McElhone

If you spotted a few familiar faces in there, you’re not alone—this lineup could make for one extremely intense poker game, let alone a bare-bones action movie.

Festival Circuit & Release Plan

This revenge fever dream actually premiered at the Venice International Film Festival back in August 2023 (yep, it’s been making the rounds for a while). Apparently, the no-dialogue angle and soundtrack got some festival buzz. Now, the folks at IFC have confirmed that we’re all going to be able to judge for ourselves on July 24, 2026. Trailer? Coming soon, supposedly. They’ve even tossed out a new still showing Ritchson and Woodley’s characters back before their lives got nuked by the plot.

So, What’s with All the Hype?

‘Motor City will be one hell of a throwback—a revenge drama with almost no dialogue, slick ‘70s Detroit aesthetics, and Jack White’s music just pounding in the background.’ If you’re getting tired of endless exposition or you just want to see Ritchson glower his way through every fight scene, this is one to watch out for.

More details as they land—I’ll keep you posted.
