After three years in limbo, Prime Video has pulled the plug on its 96% Rotten Tomatoes darling I’m a Virgo, with the creator citing budget constraints and creative roadblocks that killed any chance of a Season 2.

If you were holding out hope for more 'I'm a Virgo' on Prime Video, it is time to let it go. After three years of fans (and critics) wondering if the streaming service would actually give Boots Riley's genre-busting series a second season, we finally have an answer. Spoiler: it's not the one the show deserved.

'I'm a Virgo' Season 2 Officially Not Happening

Boots Riley himself confirmed to Screen Rant that Prime Video has no plans for a season two of 'I'm a Virgo.' So much for cliffhangers.

Remember: 'I'm a Virgo' followed Cootie (Jharrel Jerome), a 13-foot-tall Black teenager just trying to figure out life in Oakland. The show also featured Walton Goggins as an ultra-rich vigilante called The Hero, which was as unhinged as it sounds. Critics loved it—Rotten Tomatoes is still sitting at a remarkable 96% for the first (and only) season after its June 2023 premiere.

Convoluted Production, Budget Nightmares, and a Scrapped Cliffhanger

  • The first season wasn't exactly smooth sailing. Two weeks before they were supposed to finish filming, the entire team ran out of money—by about $3 million, to be exact.
  • Because of the budget crunch, Riley and his writers had to slash 40% of the original script. This included the entire penultimate episode—yep, a whole episode of story, gone.
  • Prime Video told Riley to just save those cut storylines for a possible second season. Makes sense… until you remember most of the new season ideas wouldn’t even make sense without the missing material. Riley spelled it out: those leftover plotlines 'only work in the context' of the stuff they had to cut from season one.

There's also a little Hollywood 'what-if': Riley revealed that LaKeith Stanfield (yes, the Oscar-nominated guy) was supposed to be in the show—but his Disney 'Haunted Mansion' schedule made it impossible. Riley joked that maybe Stanfield's star power would have convinced Amazon to pony up the extra cash to finish the story the right way.

Cliffhangers and Cast Moves

As if the real-world drama with money wasn’t enough, the season actually ended with a pretty wild cliffhanger: a mysterious rash started growing under Cootie’s skin. If you want to see that plot resolved, Riley’s suggestion is: 'the second season happens in your imagination.'

Since then, the stars have definitely moved on. Walton Goggins went right back to Amazon for their big-budget 'Fallout' series. Kara Young (Jones) has become a Broadway powerhouse, making history as the first Black actress with four Tony nominations in a row for Best Featured Actress.

In summary, 'I'm a Virgo' was a rare thing: a truly original, genuinely weird (in the best way) streaming show that made critics swoon, only to get kneecapped by budget chaos and awkward studio logic. Now, it joins the long list of one-and-done cult favorites. Set your expectations—and your streaming queue—accordingly.
