Paul Mescal Urges Audiences to Approach Beatles Biopics Uninformed
Paul Mescal, set to portray Paul McCartney in Sam Mendes’ Beatles biopics, suggests viewers should avoid learning too much about the band before the films’ 2028 release.
Paul Mescal, who will step into the shoes of Paul McCartney for Sam Mendes’ ambitious four-part Beatles biopic project, has made it clear he’d prefer audiences to come in with as little prior knowledge as possible. While the films are still shrouded in secrecy and won’t reach cinemas until 2028, Mescal’s comments have added a fresh layer of intrigue to the much-anticipated productions.
In a recent chat with Variety, Mescal was careful not to let slip any specifics about his role or the films themselves.
“To be honest, I can say very little — actually contractually, but also I’m kind of keen to say very little about it, because I’m excited that people want to know so much about it,”
he remarked, keeping his cards close to his chest. He went on to explain that he and his fellow cast members—Harris Dickinson, Barry Keoghan, and Joseph Quinn, who will play John Lennon, Ringo Starr, and George Harrison—are still somewhat in disbelief at landing such iconic roles.
Keeping the Mystery Alive
Mescal’s reluctance to discuss the project isn’t just about contractual obligations. He believes that the less people know going in, the better the experience will be.
“I don’t want to get into the Beatles thing, not coyly, but actually because I think the world hopefully will benefit from knowing as little as possible going into it.”
With production ongoing and a release date still a couple of years off, he’s content to let curiosity build.
He also mentioned that the project will occupy him throughout 2026, following his recent turn as William Shakespeare in Hamnet, which has been making the rounds during awards season. That film recently took home the ‘Best Motion Picture – Drama’ award at the 2026 Golden Globes, adding another feather to Mescal’s cap.
Expanding the Cast
While the focus remains on the Fab Four, the ensemble for Mendes’ films has grown to include a host of figures from the band’s inner circle. Saoirse Ronan is set to play Linda McCartney, with Aimee Lou Wood as Pattie Boyd, Mia McKenna-Bruce as Maureen Starkey, and Anna Sawai as Yoko Ono. The supporting cast also features David Morrissey as Jim McCartney, Leanne Best as Aunt Mimi, and James Norton as Brian Epstein, the group’s manager.
Rounding out the line-up, Harry Lloyd will take on the role of producer George Martin, Bobby Schofield appears as tour manager Neil Aspinall, Daniel Hoffman-Gill portrays Mal Evans, Arthur Darvill is cast as press officer Derek Taylor, and Adam Pally will play manager Allen Klein. The scale and ambition of the project are evident, even if the finer details remain tightly under wraps.
