DarkStone Digital has canceled Paranormal Activity: Threshold, shocking the horror franchise’s fanbase and igniting an online backlash.

If you were looking forward to playing a Paranormal Activity video game in between all those found footage marathons, brace yourself. The latest project, Paranormal Activity: Threshold, just hit a wall, and it doesn’t look like it's coming back.

Another Paranormal Activity Game? Not Anymore.

This was supposed to be a big one for horror gamers. Threshold was being made by Brian Clarke—better known as the one-person horror gaming machine behind The Mortuary Assistant—alongside DreadXP. If you know indie horror games at all, you know Clarke’s stuff is reliably creepy, and this one had a lot of buzz coming out of its PAX East 2026 preview. The basic premise? You’re a homicide detective poking around a very fatal incident involving a couple… and obviously, things were about to get a lot more supernatural from there.

So, What Happened?

The whole thing fell apart because Paramount, who actually controls the Paranormal Activity brand, decided to pull the plug. According to Clarke, it boiled down to one choice: rush out something half-finished or walk away. He picked the second option, which is honestly pretty respectable, even if it's hugely disappointing for fans.

'Sadly, Paramount did not agree to extend development. This left me with two choices: Rush through development and release a sub-par product I would not be proud of or request we go our separate ways. I chose the latter. Proudly, DreadXP stood by me every step of the way and we parted ways with Paramount amicably. It was an honor to even be considered to work on an IP I love so much. So this chapter ends for me but I’m not going anywhere.'

So, no rushed cash-in. But also, no game.

The Broader Paranormal Activity Universe

If you’re keeping track, the Paranormal Activity franchise has had seven movies, with an eighth one (still untitled) coming in 2027. Interesting sidebar: the new movie's director is apparently playing around with the evolution of camera technology, which actually fits perfectly with the series’ obsession with surveillance footage. Maybe the eighth time’s the charm? We’ll see.

What Could Have Been

  • Game Title: Paranormal Activity: Threshold
  • Developer: Brian Clarke (aka DarkStone Digital) and DreadXP
  • Premise: You play a homicide detective digging into a mysterious couple’s death—expect plenty of found-footage style jump scares
  • Why Cancelled: Paramount nixed an extension of the development timeline, leading Clarke to drop out rather than rush
  • Release Window: Planned for 2026, PC and consoles (not happening now)
  • Franchise Status: Seven movies out now, with Paranormal Activity 8 dropping May 21, 2027

If this cancellation has you annoyed, you’re not alone—horror fans were genuinely hyped for what looked like a cool expansion of the franchise. It doesn’t help that the last time we got a Paranormal Activity game, it was, let’s say, forgettable. Here’s hoping the next film sticks the landing.
