Outlander ignites backlash with a Season 8 Episode 7 death that swaps the victim from the books, and author Diana Gabaldon is blasting the change as a cowardly dodge.

Well, if you thought Outlander had already played every high-stakes card it had, think again. The latest episode of Season 8 blind-sided book fans with a major death — but not the one everybody was expecting. Let’s just say Diana Gabaldon, the author behind this whole saga, is not amused.

Who Died and How That’s Different From the Books

Here’s what went down: In Episode 7, Fergus Fraser (played by César Domboy), steps up and sacrifices himself in a house fire to get his family out safely. It’s definitely dramatic, and sure, it’ll get the waterworks going — but there’s a twist for anyone who’s read the books.

In Gabaldon’s original story, Fergus’ son, Henri-Christian, is the one who tragically dies (and not in a subtle way). The show nearly teases the same outcome — Henri-Christian is in serious danger — but at the end, it’s Fergus who doesn’t make it out alive.

The Author’s Take: Not Happy, At All

Gabaldon, never one to hold back, made it clear this change wasn’t her idea, and (in her opinion) not a brave one either. Here’s her pretty direct reaction:

“I can tell you that they killed Fergus because they (personally) couldn’t stand to kill Henri-Christian. Several of them told me it was the final line of that scene from the book— '...the sound of his head striking the cobbles was the sound of the end of the world' that horrified them so much they couldn’t stand to do it onscreen,” Gabaldon told Parade. “I suppose they thought they had to kill somebody.”

If that wasn’t blunt enough, she added that if the showrunners were, quote, "too chicken to do it right, they should just have eased back and burned down the print-shop — but (luckily) not my call."

The Aftermath On Screen (and More Gripes)

The storyline in the episode is predictably heavy: Marsali (Lauren Lyle) — Fergus’ wife — escapes with the kids and goes straight to break the devastating news to the Frasers. Emotional fallout all around.

Gabaldon’s complaints didn’t stop with the death swap. She also took issue with a subplot: the show has William (Charles Vandervaart) discovering that Lord John (David Berry) is gay, something Gabaldon says was done just for "shock value" and has "absolutely no reason" to exist in the plot.

“Essentially, this episode isn’t a structural part of the show; it’s just a collection of shocks.”

To Sum Up…

  • The show killed off Fergus in a fire, breaking with the source material where his son dies instead.
  • Gabaldon is not a fan, saying the team opted for a safer, less disturbing story choice.
  • There’s also criticism about unnecessary plot reveals inserted for dramatic effect.
  • Season 8 episodes are dropping on Fridays, and at this rate, who knows what else will change.

In short, Outlander just keeps veering off-road from the books, and Gabaldon's absolutely here for the ride — mainly to point out every wrong turn.
