Elon Musk’s AI spin on The Odyssey has sailed into a storm of online flak over its history blunders — and the reactions are merciless.

Right, here’s a weird slice of streaming chaos: Elon Musk took a swing at Homer’s The Odyssey—armed with AI, naturally—and the first results are, well, not exactly historic for the right reasons. Musk banged on all year about doing a “historically accurate” version of the epic, after he’d spent months rolling his eyes at Christopher Nolan’s big screen take. Now, his AI-powered effort has finally landed online, and the internet’s wasting little time picking it apart.

‘That is some expensive slop’

AI, Accusations, and Awkward Costumes

This first episode—just seven minutes, hardly Homeric—dropped on 24 October 2026, and what you get is AI visuals courtesy of Grok Imagine, produced with Wonder Studios, and director Dev Walker steering the ship. One thing Musk was adamant about: this version would deliver actual historical accuracy. But viewers clocked the details immediately: odd medieval tunics, Roman cloaks popping up centuries out of place, even the odd belt buckle that would have baffled any decent Mycenaean.

Social media lit up as X users started cataloguing the wrongness. The casting didn’t help Musk’s case—pretty much everyone on screen is white, and the visuals, described as ‘soulless’ by more than one post, haven’t exactly charmed the classicists or film buffs either.

“Historical” Doesn’t Mean What You Think

  • Nolan’s The Odyssey launched this July, took in over $1.7 billion worldwide, and was more or less loved across the board. Musk has been needling it openly for months, especially having a go at the casting choices.
  • This new Musk Odyssey episode uses plain English dialogue throughout, never mind that earlier this year Musk said he’d make it available in Homeric Greek if fans wanted it. Good luck spotting even a stray Greek phrase—no one seems to have found one yet.
  • William Oakham called out on X exactly what wasn’t “historically accurate” about it: ‘medieval tunics’, ‘Romanesque arches’, and, oddly, wherever the Greeks went, they apparently just brought a lot of dirt with them.
  • Musk previewed a short AI-generated Odyssey clip months before this, which already had viewers in fits about the odd visuals—so this full episode hasn’t exactly caught anyone off-guard by being a mess.
Here’s how William Oakham summed it up on social: “Belt buckles, Medieval tunics and late Roman cloaks, Romanesque arches, zero Greek or Mycenaean mural paintings, everyone is dirty all the time... this is the worst kind of slop.”

And for anyone keeping up with the Musk media universe, the bloke’s just had a four-hour documentary about himself, which actually drew fairly positive reviews. Safe to say, Musk’s own reaction was predictable—he labelled it a ‘hit piece’ and muttered about suing. That bit, at least, felt exactly as authentic as advertised.
