Buried under suffocating prosthetics as X-Men: Apocalypse’s big bad, Oscar Isaac says he spent the shoot overheated and cut off from co-stars like Jennifer Lawrence.

So, remember Oscar Isaac’s turn as the big blue villain in X-Men: Apocalypse? Let’s just say it wasn’t exactly the highlight of his CV, or the franchise, for that matter. Recently, Isaac talked about what really went down behind the scenes of that movie – and if you thought it looked uncomfortable, well, you have no idea.

The Curse of the Cooling Tent

The main draw for Isaac was working with all those heavy-hitters – Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy. Who wouldn’t want that, right? Here’s how he spelled this out during his Hot Ones appearance:

'One of the big reasons I did the job, I was like Fassbender? Jennifer Lawrence? McAvoy? All these amazing actors. Yeah! And then I never saw any of them because I was so overheated. And like I couldn’t turn. So, I just got put in this cooling tent.'

That’s right – he spent so much time encased in layers of prosthetics, makeup, and the world’s least flattering bodysuit that he barely even got to say hi to the cast he actually signed up to work with. The experience was so rough, he says he’d just be stuck in a cooling tent between takes, occasionally getting a pat on the back from someone breezing by. By the time he could turn around (in that suit? good luck), whoever it was had vanished. If that sounds comical, remember: he wasn’t kidding about it being excruciating.

No Regrets – Sort Of

Here’s the surprising part: even with all that, Isaac isn’t here to trash the movie. Back in 2022, he told The New York Times that he won’t pretend the film never happened. To paraphrase: he knew exactly what he wanted to do, he loved the character of Apocalypse from the comics – and at the time, being in a movie with that cast sounded like a dream gig. He got to live his X-Men fanboy fantasy, kind of. The problem? Mostly, he was isolated, buried under latex, and couldn’t interact with anyone.

He admitted he wishes the movie had been better – ideally by giving his villain a little more depth and care – but hey, that’s Hollywood. You take your shot, sometimes you just end up sweating alone in a tent.

The X-Men Movie Rollercoaster

  • X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Days of Future Past – both got positive buzz as the franchise’s modern highlights.
  • X-Men: Apocalypse – well, it just couldn’t keep up. If anything, it ended up being one of the series’ bigger disappointments, especially when you factor in the cast and expectations.
  • Dark Phoenix – and then, somehow, the bar dropped even lower. If you thought Apocalypse was a letdown, Dark Phoenix made it look better by comparison. Honestly, I’d call it my personal low point for the whole franchise.

To sum up: Oscar Isaac took a swing at being an iconic mutant villain because he actually wanted to hang out with the coolest crowd in Hollywood – and then spent most of his time (literally) isolated and roasting in a space suit. He’s not bitter, but he’s also not pretending it was the greatest experience of his life. Next time Hollywood offers you a supervillain gig with head-to-toe prosthetics, maybe ask about the ventilation first.
