Off Campus Takes Prime Video by Storm as Heated Rivalry Successor Soars on Streaming
Just 48 hours after its Prime Video debut, Off Campus has rocketed into smash-hit territory for Amazon MGM Studios.
If you thought the world had reached its limit on campus hockey romance dramas, think again. After HBO Max scored big with Heated Rivalry last year—seriously, it was a huge hit—Prime Video clearly took notice and decided it was time to toss their own puck onto the streaming ice. Their new contender, Off Campus, premiered May 13 and took off faster than a slapshot: it hit #1 on Flix Patrol’s Global Top 10, and it’s currently wedged right behind The Boys Season 5 on the U.S. chart.
So, what sets Off Campus apart? While Heated Rivalry was all about a forbidden romance between two male hockey stars, Prime Video flips the script—this time, it’s a guy/girl situation, and the drama is no less intense.
What You’re Actually Watching Here
Off Campus isn’t just some loose imitation; it’s adapted from Elle Kennedy’s best-selling (and pretty addictive) book series of the same name. The show keeps things familiar for Kennedy fans, but with slick production values and a cast that actually clicks.
- Ella Bright plays Hannah Wells, a music major at Briar University. She’s juggling classes, a job at the local hockey rink (because of course she is), and panicking about money after losing her scholarship.
- Belmont Cameli is Garret Graham, captain of the Briar University Hawks and all-around sports golden boy. He’s aiming to join the Boston Bruins—but he’s at serious risk of flunking out because, as usual, the jock can’t keep up with philosophy class.
- The hook? Garret needs Hannah to tutor him so he doesn’t get kicked off the team. In exchange, he’ll do her a favor: pretend to be her boyfriend, which will hopefully make her actual crush jealous enough to finally notice she exists. Classic fake dating move, but it never actually stays fake, does it?
- Add a secret Elton John performance, Garret quietly catching feelings, and a whole lot of will-they/won’t-they tension, and you’ve got yourself eight quick-fire episodes with more chemistry than the entire science department.
Performance Stats: How’s It Actually Doing?
Turns out, this formula still works. Off Campus is pretty much neck-and-neck with Heated Rivalry on Rotten Tomatoes—currently sitting at a 94% critics' score (the other show is at 96%, if you’re keeping track). Fans are also signing off—Popcornmeter puts it at 85% approval, which is just barely shy of Heated Rivalry's 89%.
Already Want a Second Season?
For those who’ve powered through all eight episodes and are ready for more, you’re in luck: Season 2 was locked in before the first one even hit Prime Video. Amazon clearly saw some potential here, and it paid off handsomely. The only bad news is you’ll be waiting a while—new episodes aren’t expected until sometime in April or May 2027.
And here’s one detail for the book nerds: each season is expected to jump to a different central romance from Kennedy’s series, kind of like how Bridgerton shifts to a new couple every year. As of now, nobody’s saying which book or couple is next, but you know I’ll keep you posted when the info drops.
'It’s a simple premise, but one that works incredibly well thanks to the chemistry between Bright and Cameli, which is completely off the charts.'
