Fans will have to wait to stream Obsession — Curry Barker’s hit is delaying its digital drop to give the theatrical window more runway.

Let's be honest, nobody saw Obsession coming. This moody little suspense flick from Curry Barker has turned into the kind of box office juggernaut the studios keep dreaming about but rarely get. And now, in a move that practically screams "we're onto a winner," Universal and Focus Features have punted its digital release down the line. So if you wanted to watch it from your sofa, you're going to have to cool your jets a bit longer.

What's Going On With The Digital Release?

Originally, Obsession was lined up for a digital launch on June 2. That seemed like a sensible plan—back when nobody outside the industry thought it would pull in more than a polite round of applause. But then ticket sales went into overdrive, and now the suits have had a rethink. The film will stick around in cinemas for at least the standard 45-day stretch, which is turning out to be a smart call given how it's still packing out screens.

And if you're a collector (or just still into physical discs), Blu-ray.com has the film listed for a home release on 14 July 2026. Streaming? Expect it to land on Peacock, seeing as Focus Features titles usually wind up there after their theatrical run, but no official digital date yet—so, more waiting.

Why The Delay? Follow The Money

Here's the thing: Obsession isn't just holding steady at the box office, it's building. Ticket sales actually climbed a healthy 10% over last weekend, and the weekend before that was up 39% over opening—very much not the usual story for most films. The studio is no doubt keen to keep that cash flowing rather than handing over the audience to the streamers just yet.

The film's take has sailed past $148 million (globally) at this point—nothing to scoff at for a title made on a shoestring budget. In fact, it's reportedly hauled in more than ten times what it cost to make, putting it right up there among the most lucrative films ever, pound for pound.

Considering it's gone toe-to-toe against Disney's The Mandalorian and Grogu and not just stayed afloat but actually challenged them for screens, you can see why Universal and Focus Features want to keep milking the theatrical run as long as they can.

Critical Reception and What's Next

According to Rotten Tomatoes (for what it's worth), Obsession is sitting pretty with a 96% rating. The studio is understandably chuffed, and industry folk are using words like "shock" and "surprise" more than usual about its turnout at the box office. Not to mention, A24's Backrooms is the only other recent film to have caused this much head-scratching from industry analysts.

All this heat means Barker's not going anywhere. He's just signed on with A24 to direct their reboot of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (because of course he has), and apparently there's another chapter coming in the world of Obsession. Guess we'll see whether lightning strikes twice.

Who's In The Film?

  • Cast: Michael Johnston, Inde Navarrette, Cooper Tomlinson, Megan Lawless, and Andy Richter
  • Producers: James Harris, Haley Nicole Johnson, Christian Mercuri, Roman Viaris
  • Executive Producers: Jason Blum, Leonora Darby, David Haring, Mark Lane, Ruzanna Kegeyan
  • Associate Producer: Cooper Tomlinson (yes, he's acting and producing—some people really do it all)

For now, if you want to see what all the fuss is about, you'll have to trek down to your local cinema, as Obsession is still playing exclusively on the big screen.
