Spider-Noir star won't rule out another TV series, hinting a small-screen comeback could be next.

Hard as it is to believe, up until now Nicolas Cage has never fronted a TV series, despite his decades-long run of doing basically everything else under the sun. That streak ended this week with the arrival of Spider-Noir on Prime Video and MGM+ – yes, Cage playing a noir take on Spider-Man as a chain-smoking, gumshoe detective. He genuinely leans into the whole Bogart thing, and, not shockingly, audiences and critics are loving every minute. Frankly, watching him swan about in a fedora is worth the price of admission alone.

From Spider-Suit to True Detective?

Now here’s where it gets odd, or honestly, just plain interesting. For all the fuss about Cage finally stepping onto the telly, there’s already chatter about what he might do next. Turns out, Cage was heavily rumoured to take the lead in the next season of True Detective – which, if you know anything about that show’s past casting, is quite a big swing. Season four, dubbed Night Country, saw Issa López rightfully earning plaudits for her writing, direction, and general mood wizardry, so much so that HBO’s bringing her back for another round. Per tradition, every season needs a new big-name detective, and after Jodie Foster and Kali Reis delivered last time, the ante's properly upped.

The whispers first kicked off in August 2023 (yes, amidst all that Barbenheimer noise), when Variety claimed Cage was in talks to front a fifth season set in New York. The idea: Cage as a modern investigator, guided by López’s off-kilter touch. It's not just inspired – it's a match made for watercooler arguments.

Cage Sets the Record Straight (Sort Of)

Now, Variety has circled back with Cage during the press rounds for Spider-Noir, getting him to actually address all these True Detective rumours. Here’s Cage being, well, typically Cage, when asked whether he’s signing on for the series:

'I have no idea. I think they’re working on the material, but I haven’t heard about it in quite some time. I’m not signed on to anything; we’re just talking. I like Issa López a lot, and would be thrilled to work with her, but nothing is concrete. And I’ve never seen the first season of True Detective, but I’ve heard great things.'

Nicely noncommittal. All the same, the fact there's ongoing dialogue is more than we usually get at this early stage. And, apparently, the original season passed Cage by altogether – a somewhat surprising confession, given most of Hollywood won't shut up about that McConaughey and Harrelson run.

The Case for Cage (and the Competition)

With Spider-Noir, Cage proved he can absolutely carry an entire season on the small screen, even if he’s voicing a trenchcoat-wearing spider with an existential crisis. He’s also producing, so this isn’t one of those 'show up and cash the cheque' jobs. Imagine that energy dropped into a modern True Detective, with Issa López scripting all the strangeness – it’s honestly the most intriguing direction I’ve heard for the series in ages, and that’s saying something given the show’s knack for attracting A-list talent.

  • Season 1: Matthew McConaughey & Woody Harrelson
  • Season 2: Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Taylor Kitsch, Vince Vaughn
  • Season 3: Mahershala Ali
  • Season 4 ('Night Country'): Jodie Foster & Kali Reis
  • Possibly Season 5: Nicolas Cage?

For now, there’s no other heavy-hitter being bandied about for this new season, which is unusual; past years were always awash with speculation and surprise additions. If they do pin Cage down, it could easily wind up being the wildest and most anticipated run the show’s ever managed.
