Nia DaCosta Eyes Invincible Film, Suggests Zack Snyder as Ideal Director
Nia DaCosta, director of The Marvels, has voiced her ambition to adapt Invincible for the big screen, while hinting that Zack Snyder might be the perfect fit to bring Robert Kirkman’s gritty comic to life.
It’s been nearly a decade since talk first surfaced about bringing Invincible to life in a live-action format. Now, Nia DaCosta, who helmed The Marvels, has thrown her hat in the ring, expressing a keen interest in adapting Robert Kirkman’s celebrated comic series for cinema. Ahead of the release of 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, DaCosta took to Reddit for an AMA, where she made her intentions clear—she’s got a distinct vision for the project, particularly when it comes to capturing the rawness and emotional punch of the source material.
I would LOVE to direct a live action film version of Robert Kirkman’s Invincible. The comic and cartoon are amazing. I know exactly how I’d want to translate that world, and that amazing father/son relationship, to screen. I also just love the idea of making something in a superhero world that has some real grit and viscera–and s-x!
Whether her enthusiasm will translate into an actual production remains to be seen, especially given the rather mixed response to her previous foray into the superhero genre. The reception of The Bone Temple could well tip the scales, but for now, there’s another name that keeps cropping up as a potential director for Invincible: Zack Snyder.
Invincible’s Live-Action Prospects
Despite the initial announcement all those years ago, a live-action Invincible has yet to materialise. The focus, quite understandably, has been on the animated series, which, according to Kirkman, could run for seven or eight seasons to do justice to the full 144-issue arc.
The show has carved out a proper place in pop culture, drawing both critical acclaim and a loyal following. So, it’s hardly surprising that a film adaptation hasn’t been rushed. Kirkman himself hasn’t closed the door on the idea, though, and has even said he’d be surprised if it never happened.
Unfortunately, there’s not much I can say. I will say that the television show makes it vastly easier and vastly more difficult in various different aspects of the development of the movie. That’s kind of where I have to leave it, unfortunately. It’s still early going. I would be shocked if it doesn’t happen one day.
With a fourth season of the animated series on the horizon, there’s no shortage of material to keep fans entertained while any live-action plans remain in limbo.
Why Snyder Might Be the Right Choice
Should the live-action adaptation ever get off the ground, Zack Snyder’s name is likely to be in the mix. While his track record with comic book adaptations is a bit patchy, his flair for dark, large-scale storytelling could be just what Invincible needs.
One stumbling block for Snyder in the past has been his writing—his insistence on scripting his own projects hasn’t always paid off. Ideally, he’d focus on the visual side, working from a robust script, much as he did with Man of Steel and Dawn of the Dead.
His knack for staging grand, operatic action sequences, as seen in MOS, would likely mesh well with the tone of Kirkman’s world. It’s anyone’s guess which direction Kirkman and Amazon will eventually take, but the prospect of Snyder at the helm is certainly an intriguing one.
Invincible’s Future Remains Unwritten
For now, speculation continues. Who would you choose to direct a live-action Invincible? The animated series is still going strong on Amazon Prime Video in the US, so there’s plenty to keep viewers busy while the film adaptation remains a tantalising possibility.
