Director Nia DaCosta has revealed her keen interest in helming a live-action version of Invincible, hinting at a bold, visceral approach to the superhero saga.

Nia DaCosta, whose recent work on The Marvels drew a rather mixed response from the MCU faithful, appears undeterred by the experience. As she gears up for the release of her horror sequel, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, DaCosta took part in a Reddit Q&A hosted by Sony Pictures. When quizzed about which established franchise she’d most like to tackle next, her answer caught many off guard: she’s set her sights on a live-action adaptation of Prime Video’s Invincible.

DaCosta didn’t mince words about her enthusiasm.

“The comic and cartoon are amazing,”

she wrote.

“I know exactly how I’d want to translate that world, and that amazing father/son relationship, to screen. I also just love the idea of making something in a superhero world that has some real grit and viscera – and sex!”

Invincible’s Unconventional Superhero Story

For those unfamiliar, Invincible springs from the mind of Robert Kirkman, best known for The Walking Dead. The story follows Mark Grayson, a teenager voiced by Steven Yeun, as he learns the ropes of heroism from his father, Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons), who also happens to be the planet’s most formidable protector. Mark soon discovers that balancing everyday life with world-saving duties is anything but straightforward.

The animated series has already run for three seasons, with a fourth scheduled for March 2026. Its blend of family drama, brutal action, and dark humour has won over a loyal audience, and talk of a live-action version has been swirling for years.

Rumours and Reactions

Speculation about a cinematic adaptation has been around since 2017, when Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg were first linked to the project. In the intervening years, Steven Yeun was asked whether he’d be interested in reprising his role in a live-action format. His response was characteristically candid:

“Well, I am 40.”

When it was suggested he might instead play Mark’s father, Yeun replied,

“Yeah, we’ll see. I love working with Robert. That comic is so great, and it goes so long and so deep. So, I’m excited to see that play itself out. Right now, we’re having a lot of fun making this show. Live action – who knows?”

With Invincible continuing to stream and a new season on the horizon, fans have plenty to keep them occupied. For those who’ve already devoured the series, there’s no shortage of other Prime offerings to explore while waiting to see if DaCosta’s vision ever makes it to the big screen.
