New Saw 11 Update Just Made the Wait for James Wan’s Horror Reboot a Lot Easier
Saw 11 is slicing back into the spotlight as franchise creator James Wan sharpens the script, giving fans something grisly to look forward to while the next chapter takes shape.
Fans of gruesome puzzles and increasingly creative traps, here’s a little something to tide you over: Saw 11 is actually moving forward, and the big names behind the original mayhem are in the mix again. If you thought this franchise’s days of slicing up the box office were behind it, think again — the wheels are turning, even if we don’t have much to work with yet.
James Wan Is Back in Action
Not to oversell it, but horror architect James Wan (who cooked up the original Saw all those movies ago) is deep in what the execs are calling 'the trenches' as he and his team figure out the next bloody chapter for the series. Helen Lee-Kim, Lionsgate's President of International, says they're 'mapping out the future of the Saw universe.' To translate: they're working on the script, but nothing’s been officially shown around yet.
Where the Movie Stands
- Announcement: Saw 11 was first teased back in 2023. Since then, the franchise swapped distributors and is now at Blumhouse — whose whole brand is indie horror hits.
- Creative Team: Jason Blum (yes, that Blum) confirmed that James Wan is seriously involved. (If you want the familiar nightmare atmosphere, that’s probably good news.)
- What They're Promising: Wan and his longtime collaborator Leigh Whannell want to get back to the intensity of the original, focusing more on psychological terror than overblown gore.
- No Script, No Release Date: This thing isn’t ready to shoot. Nobody’s seen a script, and you can forget about a release date for now.
Plot? Still Locked in a Reverse Bear Trap
Nobody’s spilling plot details. Wan did say he's aiming for something 'psychologically scarring' (which is honestly the Saw franchise’s whole job description). The only real hint so far comes straight from Wan himself on Letterboxd:
'Leigh and I both want to recapture the spirit of that first film and revisit Jigsaw's philosophy, which is that he goes after people who don't appreciate their lives. If you're a scumbag, but you appreciate your life, he doesn't see you as someone who's wasting your life, so I want to go back to what we touched on in the first movie in regard to that.'
Quick Franchise Status Check
The Saw series is one of those rare horror franchises that just keeps cashing in — over $1.1 billion at the worldwide box office so far. The last film, Saw X, surprised pretty much everyone by pulling off the best reviews yet (weirdly, it was also a prequel — these timelines are their own kind of puzzle).
If you’re wondering about John 'Jigsaw' Kramer (played by Tobin Bell), yes, the original killer got killed off way back in Saw 3. Didn't really stop him from showing up again and again, thanks to prequels, flashbacks, and frankly some creative timeline gymnastics. There’s no word on whether Saw 11 is a proper reboot, a continuation, or yet another prequel.
Bottom line: no one’s seen a script, but the original mad scientists are back, and given how surprisingly good Saw X was, keeping an eye on this thing seems justified.
Saw 11 is coming someday. Just not soon.
