The 1987 Masters of the Universe skipped fan favorite Orko. Now the 2026 reboot faces the big question: will the pint-size sorcerer finally materialize—or be held back for a sequel?

Let’s talk about something suspiciously missing from the new Masters of the Universe movie. I’ve watched the trailers. You’ve probably watched the trailers. There’s a parade of classic He-Man characters (and a couple deep cuts for extra credit) strutting into view, but one major fan favorite is MIA. Orko. The floating blue wizard, eternally screwing up his spells for laughs, is nowhere in sight. For a franchise reboot that’s otherwise cramming in everything from Prince Adam to Fisto (and yes, that’s a very unfortunate name), this is a weird omission.

Roll Call: Who’s Actually in These Trailers?

In case you missed it, here’s who we are definitely seeing in the early footage:

  • Prince Adam/He-Man (obviously, it’s in the title)
  • Teela
  • Skeletor (still nobody can take him seriously, but he’s there)
  • Evil-Lyn
  • Man-At-Arms
  • Battle Cat (full points for not chickening out on the green and yellow tiger)
  • Plus: Roboto, Ram-Head, Trap Head, Goat Man, and Fisto. (And don’t mix up Fisto with Kit Fisto, the Jedi. Whole different universe, whole different tentacles.)

Notice someone missing? Orko. Arguably one of the most iconic characters from the original cartoon, he’s been left completely out of the promo cycle for this 2026 reboot.

Orko: What’s the Big Deal?

If you somehow managed to avoid He-Man lore, here’s Orko in a nutshell: he was created for the original 1980s cartoon as comic relief. Orko’s a floating blue magician from the dimension of Trolla, who mostly covers himself up in massive hats and scarves, leaving only some big yellow eyes and pokey blue ears visible. His magic is unreliable (which is sort of the joke), and even by He-Man standards that’s saying something.

Orko wasn’t even in the original toyline, but kids loved him anyway, so Mattel eventually figured out how to turn ‘floating wizard doofus’ into a toy. He quickly became the most recognizable face of the entire franchise’s supporting cast.

But when the infamous 1987 live-action Masters of the Universe movie landed (with Dolph Lundgren doing his best Arnold impression as He-Man), Orko was nowhere to be seen. Practical effects couldn’t handle a constant floater, so the filmmakers swapped him out for a brand-new character: Gwildor, the quirky little inventor who fiddled with gadgets instead of magic. Gwildor was kind of a diet Orko, and predictably sparked debate among fans over who was the superior sidekick.

'The old excuse was that a floating magician was just too complicated for 1980s Hollywood, so they invented an awkward replacement character. But with modern CGI, that's out the window. The question now is: what’s really behind Orko’s disappearance this time?'

The Gwildor vs. Orko Rivalry (Yes, This Exists)

For what it’s worth, fans never forgot the substitution. Gwildor actually became a cult favorite himself (a small victory for the weirdos) and, decades later, the two characters even met on-screen in Netflix’s Masters of the Universe: Revolution, a show that hilariously acknowledged their 'meta-rivalry' and gave them a magical science vs. sorcery team-up mission to save Eternia.

So, logistical limitations have fallen away. Hollywood’s got the technology now. If you can put Krypto the Super-Dog and a giant Battle Cat on screen, you can make Orko work. So why is the new Masters of the Universe (directed by Travis Knight) still sidelining him?

Ominous Parallels and Theories: Orko’s Fate in 2026

Let’s be honest – the new film is already inviting negative comparisons to the 1987 version, not just for flying characters but also because it sticks its cast on present-day Earth (never a great sign for a fantasy property). But if you’re digging deep into He-Man’s back-catalogue for sidekicks like Goat Man, holding Orko in reserve starts to look deliberate.

Hollywood loves a slow play. Maybe they’re saving Orko for a post-credit tease à la 'here comes Yoshi' in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Or, maybe the new movie is meant to be a prequel/origin scenario, and Orko won’t even show up in Eternia until He-Man and crew have their status quo established. The trailer hints at Skeletor taking over Eternia and He-Man leading a rebellion, so Orko might have gone missing, in hiding, or simply not arrived yet from Trolla. All of which would tee him up for a big reveal in a sequel.

Translation: Don’t expect him until at least the post-credits, if not 'Masters of the Universe 2: Even More Masters'.

So Who Could (or Should) Play Orko?

Here’s an angle most mainstream outlets haven’t touched: Griffin Newman. If you care about voice acting, you probably know Newman crushed it as Orko in Netflix’s Revelation and Revolution (and before that, almost got to play H.E.R.B.I.E. the robot in the Fantastic Four: First Steps animated project, before they went with a non-verbal version instead).

Newman took Orko from one-joke sidekick to a surprisingly nuanced hero, even giving him his big Gandalf showdown against Scare-Glow. If the reboot’s creative team are smart, they’ll keep that continuity going and just cast him again – even if he’s not a huge marquee star. It’s like how Peter Cullen will always be Optimus Prime, or Jim Cummings keeps returning as Winnie the Pooh. Sometimes the right voice is the right choice.

Will we see him in a mysterious post-credits float-in, setting up a true He-Man/Orko teamup for the next movie? That’s the smart bet right now.
