Netflix just scooped U.S. rights to Sacrifice, a 2025 satirical comedy led by Chris Evans and Anya Taylor-Joy, with Romain Gavras directing and Charli XCX in the mix — a star-packed takedown headed for your queue next year.

If you thought Chris Evans was done with wild rides after Captain America hung up his shield, think again. Netflix has just snagged the U.S. rights to a new comedy called 'Sacrifice', starring Evans and Anya Taylor-Joy. And honestly, it sounds like the sort of film people are going to argue about at parties for years.

Comedy, Cults, and… Charlie XCX?

'Sacrifice' had its secretive world premiere last year during the Special Presentations slot at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, so it’s already got that festival pedigree going for it — plus a cast list that reads like someone got a bit overexcited at a casting agency Christmas party.

  • Anya Taylor-Joy plays Joan, a woman who seems to think she’s had a message from the volcano gods (not joking) and takes matters into her own hands to 'save' the world.
  • Chris Evans is Mike Tyler, a washed-up movie star who’s just trying to hold it together when he ends up on the wrong side of Joan’s doomsday plot.
  • Salma Hayek Pinault and Vincent Cassel pop up as some of the unlucky hostages, alongside Sam Richardson, music artist Charli XCX, and even Swedish rapper Yung Lean. If you had that on your 2025 bingo card, congrats, you win a prize.
  • The rest of the cast features Ambika Mod, Jade Croot, Jeremy O. Harris, and Miriam Silverman. You know a film’s got range when Charli XCX and Vincent Cassel are sharing scenes.

A Plot That’s Just a Bit Off the Wall

The official synopsis is pretty bonkers, in the best possible way: Joan (Taylor-Joy), believing she’s the only one who can hear a certain apocalyptic prophecy, rallies a small group of true believers and crashes a high-society charity do. Three hostages — a defeated movie star, the world’s wealthiest mogul, and a woman with legendarily bad luck — are carted off by Joan’s gang on a trek that moves from bonkers to completely unhinged. All roads apparently lead to Mike (Evans) facing the ultimate question: what exactly would he give up for the good of humanity? Call me cynical, but I’m betting more than one shocking twist before the credits roll.

Behind the Camera – And the Madness

Romain Gavras, best known for the blistering drama Athena, takes the director’s chair for this one, which makes me think there’s going to be just the right amount of chaos. In case you’re interested in the production powerhouses: Robert Walak, Jacob Perlin, Gregory Jankilevitsch, Klaudia Smieja-Rostworowska, and Giorgios Karnavas are on producing duties, with both Taylor-Joy and Evans signing on as executive producers as well. Bit of a vanity project, then? Maybe, but with a cast like this, I’m not complaining.

'Sacrifice tells the story of Joan (Taylor-Joy), a zealous spirit driven by a volcanic prophecy only she can hear, who is on a mission to save the world from a fiery reckoning...'

It’s a Busy Time for the Stars

As for where you’ve seen these faces lately: Taylor-Joy just came off the Apple TV+ sci-fi action flick The Gorge and will be stepping back into her role as Alia Atreides for Dune: Part Three later in the year. She’s also got the Apple TV+ series Lucky queueing up shortly.

Evans, meanwhile, is fresh from Materialists and Honey Don’t!, and Marvel fans can probably stop sobbing — he’s officially returning as Steve Rogers in next year’s Avengers: Doomsday.

Final Word

‘Sacrifice’ sounds like exactly the kind of oddball, character-packed satire that’s going to get people talking — and most likely yelling — once it hits Netflix. No release date yet, but keep an eye on this one if you like your comedies a bit unhinged and your casting decisions even more so.
