Netflix’s Extraction Universe Expands With a Spin-Off Promising Large-Scale, Big-Screen Action
Filming on Extraction: Tygo is a wrap—and behind-the-scenes intel teases a barrage of blockbuster-scale explosions.
If you thought Netflix was content to let its Chris Hemsworth-powered action machine, Extraction, just coast along, think again. Not only is Hemsworth coming back for yet another round as Tyler Rake, but Netflix is spinning the franchise out in a couple of wild new directions—including one project that sounds like it could up the ante on explosions and knuckle-busting action.
Extraction: Tygo – Don Lee Steps Up
Let’s start with what might be the most intriguing offshoot: Extraction: Tygo (or just TYGO, if you’re in a hurry). Here, Chris Hemsworth taking a break, and the ever-underrated bruiser Ma Dong-seok (a.k.a. Don Lee, probably best known for turning zombies into pulp in Train to Busan and for absolutely demolishing skulls in The Roundup) takes the spotlight. Tygo isn’t just flexing muscles for the fun of it, though—he plays a former child soldier on a revenge bender through Korea’s underworld, apparently after a mission goes sideways in spectacular fashion.
As if Don Lee in pure rampage mode isn’t enough, he’s reuniting with his Roundup team: director Lee Sang-yong and writer Cha Woo-jin are both back, so expect a similar brand of unapologetically heavy-handed mayhem. Plus, the supporting cast is far from an afterthought—Lee Jin-uk (yep, the guy from Squid Game) and, for that extra slice of global appeal, Lisa (from the K-pop juggernaut Blackpink and The White Lotus) are also on board.
The production’s not messing around, by the way. Variety reports that the main shoot just wrapped in Jakarta, and they weren’t afraid to shut down major city roads to unleash those action set pieces. So if you’re into car chases, street chaos, and big-budget smackdowns, this film is basically promising to go toe-to-toe with the main Extraction movies in terms of scale.
What Else Is Cooking? (A Lot, Apparently)
- Extraction 3: After a surprisingly long break (most likely thanks to Hemsworth’s neverending obligations as Thor), the mainline franchise is coming back. Hemsworth has cemented his return as Tyler Rake, with director Sam Hargrave (who’s basically carved out a genre niche for making impossible stunts look easy) returning as well. Development is cranking up this summer, and Netflix, alongside AGBO, are all-in.
- Mercenary Spin-Off Series: Netflix isn’t stopping with Tygo—there’s also a new series in the works starring Omar Sy (Lupin, if you live on the Prestige TV internet) as yet another gun-for-hire. This time, he’s dropping into Libya to save hostages. So, more globe-trotting, messy rescue missions—just how Netflix likes it.
In Case You Need a Recap...
For anyone who slept through the last few years of action-movie dominance: the original Extraction dropped in 2020 and instantly became one of those Netflix streaming monsters, briefly making you believe you could survive jumping off a building like Tyler Rake (do not try this at home). Extraction 2 hit in 2023 and yes, Hemsworth returned to complain about his personal demons while racking up a body count. Now, Extraction is officially a franchise with enough spin-offs, side-missions, and fist-fights for everyone.
Director’s Promise: Big. Very Big.
As Variety put it, Extraction: Tygo wrapped up in Jakarta after a shoot that included 'major city road closures for large-scale action sequences.' Translation: Don Lee’s ready to bulldoze halfway across town for the shot.
Netflix clearly wants Extraction to be its own continent in the action genre, and there doesn’t seem to be a ceiling in sight. If you were hoping for subtlety, look elsewhere. Otherwise, buckle up—2025 looks like it’s going to be loud.
