Netflix Revives A Different World With Sequel Series — Unconventional Release Date Revealed As Teaser Drops
Class is back in session at Hillman College. Netflix dropped the first teaser for A Different World, a sequel to the late-80s/early-90s classic, and locked its premiere date, promising a fresh class, familiar vibes, and campus drama to spare.
Back to Hillman College, are we? Netflix has finally dropped a teaser for its new spin on ‘A Different World’, that cult-favourite sitcom your older cousin probably vanished into on rerun afternoons. This isn’t just a nostalgia play, though – we’re getting a sequel series, a fresh batch of students, and yes, some familiar faces doing the campus rounds.
What You’re Actually Getting
The new show picks up at Hillman College, but this time our lead is Deborah Wayne (played by Maleah Joi Moon). If the surname rings a bell, that’s because she’s the daughter of Whitley and Dwayne – and if those names don’t mean anything to you, you either missed the original or your WiFi bills are too high.
Here’s the official gist: Deborah’s the youngest of the Wayne clan, a proper free spirit, big heart, big dreams, and – crucially – absolutely living in the shadow of her legendary parents while she tries to work out, well, who she actually is. She’s just starting out at Hillman and naturally, chaos and hijinks ensue. It’s set up, according to Netflix, as:
'A hopeful dramedy, full of heart and unapologetically centered on the richness and complexity of the Black experience.'
Meet the New Class
- Maleah Joi Moon – Deborah Wayne (centre stage, and probably centre of every campus scandal)
- Alijah Kai
- Cornell Young IV
- Jordan Aaron Hall
- Kennedi Reece
- Chibuikem Uche
- ...and more still to be revealed
Expect the hallways to feel properly modern, but you can count on a few Hillman legends returning too, at least for the odd guest spot (Netflix would be daft not to).
Timing is Everything
Now this is a bit clever: the original A Different World spun off from The Cosby Show in September 1987, running for six seasons and wrapping up in 1993. Netflix clearly loves a neat anniversary, so they’re dropping the new series on 24 September 2026 – exactly 39 years to the day since the original’s debut. Not a round number, but it’s oddly satisfying all the same.
Behind the Scenes
Felicia Pride is running the show, which is promising if you know her earlier work (think ‘Queen Sugar’, not just random IMDb credits). Executive producers include Tom Werner, Debbie Allen, Reggie Rock Bythewood, Gina Prince Bythewood, Mandy Summers, and Pride herself. Feels like a proper line-up if you want that good mix of legacy and fresh perspective.
Episode Count & Platform
There’ll be ten episodes in the first run, all landing on Netflix. Teaser trailer’s out now, so you can get a taste, though as usual, don’t expect major plot giveaways – it’s more about the vibes and a quick hello from the new cast. Full series drops 24 September 2026.
