Netflix Lands Taylor Sheridan’s Lawmen: Bass Reeves
Taylor Sheridan’s gritty 2023 miniseries Lawmen: Bass Reeves, once a Paramount+ exclusive, rides onto Netflix on Monday, June 1, bringing the true story of one of the first African American Deputy U.S. Marshals west of the Mississippi.
Here's a fun piece of streaming news that crosses the wires between prestige Western TV, true-crime Americana, and platform hopscotch: one of those Taylor Sheridan-produced dramas — you know, the guy behind Yellowstone — is trading its cowboy boots in for some Netflix sneakers. The show? Lawmen: Bass Reeves, which originally ran exclusively on Paramount+ back in 2023. If you missed it on its first rodeo, you'll get a crack at it on Netflix starting June 1, 2026. (No, that's not a typo. Two years from now. Maybe set a very long-term reminder.)
What's the Show?
Lawmen: Bass Reeves drops us into the life of, you guessed it, Bass Reeves — the real-life guy who became one of the first Black Deputy US Marshals west of the Mississippi. It's the kind of story Hollywood should have told years ago: Reeves went from slave to legendary lawman, tracking down over 3,000 criminals in his day and blowing away plenty of myths about the Old West while he was at it.
The Creative Team (and Some Backstage Shuffling)
- Executive Producer: Taylor Sheridan (yes, the Yellowstone creator, but he handed off showrunning this time)
- Showrunner & Creator: Chad Feehan (who's done time on Ray Donovan, Banshee, Rectify, and Southland; he's also attached to that upcoming Yellowstone spinoff Dutton Ranch)
- Source Material: The first two books in Sidney Thompson's Bass Reeves trilogy:
- Follow the Angels, Follow the Doves (covers Reeves' life from slavery to badge)
- Hell on the Border (follows the prime of Reeves' career)
- Directors: Christina Alexandra Voros (Yellowstone, 1883) helmed five episodes; Damian Marcano (known for The Pitt) handled the other three.
- Lauren E. Banks
- Demi Singleton
- Forrest Goodluck
- Barry Pepper
- Dennis Quaid (yes, Dennis Quaid still out here doing the work)
- Donald Sutherland
- Grantham Coleman
- ...and several others in major supporting roles
Quick bit of behind-the-scenes trivia for you: when they first dreamed up this series, it was supposed to be a spinoff of Sheridan's 1883 (which is itself a spinoff of Yellowstone — franchise nesting dolls, anyone?). Early on, it was even called 1883: The Bass Reeves Story. But as the writers dug into Reeves' life, they realized his story was strong enough to stand on its own. So, out went the prequel branding, and in came a standalone title.
The Cast List
David Oyelowo gets top billing as Bass Reeves, and the rest of the lineup is stacked:
Release & Reception
The mini-series dropped its first two episodes on Paramount+ on November 5, 2023, with the rest rolling out weekly (classic streaming drip-feed). It later showed up on CBS too, not something every Paramount+ original gets. Within the first week, the show drew over 7.5 million viewers — not bad at all for a new Western and proof there was real interest outside the Yellowstone-verse.
Rotten Tomatoes scores? 89% with critics, 78% with audiences. Those are solid numbers, especially for genre TV. So if you're into Westerns but want something that digs deeper than the typical white-hat-vs-black-hat stuff, this fits the bill.
Worth a Watch?
Look, if you've had your fill of cookie-cutter cowboy shows, Lawmen: Bass Reeves is actually one worth circling back for — assuming you're patient enough to wait until 2026, anyway. It's a rough ride through some overlooked American history, with a killer cast and those high-gloss Sheridan production values.
"Making this a standalone was the right call. Bass Reeves deserves more than to just be framed as a character from somebody else's story."
All in all, it took decades for Hollywood to notice Bass Reeves — but the wait delivered a pretty solid miniseries. Get ready to catch it (again, or for the first time) when it arrives on Netflix. Just start working on your patience...
