The hit sci-fi thriller is leveling up, aiming for a bigger, bolder, more epic ride than Season 1.

If you were hoping to see more of Netflix's The Eternaut sometime soon, well... you might want to get comfortable. The streamer just dropped a rare status update on its high-concept (and let’s be honest, pretty fantastic) sci-fi mystery—aka the show everyone compared to The Last of Us as soon as it hit.

Here’s the Recap

The Eternaut exploded onto Netflix last year with a killer premise: a freakish snowstorm decimates most of the world, and the unlucky survivors—led by Ricardo Darín's quietly intense Juan Salvo—find themselves not just dodging death by weather, but fighting back against a mysterious, very unfriendly invading force. If you’re sensing classic post-apocalypse tropes with an Argentine twist, you’re right. But it’s also way weirder (in a good way) than your average end-times drama.

The show is actually based on a beloved Argentine comic from the late Héctor Germán Oesterheld and Francisco Solano López. It got the live-action treatment thanks to creator/director Bruno Stagnaro, who co-wrote it with Ariel Staltari. And apparently, everyone loved it: The first season sits at an absurdly high 96% on Rotten Tomatoes and was quickly renewed after it became a streaming juggernaut in Latin America and beyond.

So, Season 2… When?

Fast-forward to now, and Netflix finally has something—sort of—to say about Season 2. Francisco Ramos, Netflix’s VP of Content for Latin America, gave Deadline a pretty honest lowdown on where things stand. Spoiler: if you thought they’d gotten started shooting, nope. Here’s the situation:

  • No actors on set yet. All the work so far is happening behind the scenes on special effects and figuring out just how wild they can get with VFX.
  • The plan for this round is much bigger: not just a fatter budget, but an upgrade on everything—world-building, scale, you name it.
  • There's no locked-in filming date yet, and Ramos dodged specifics—just that getting the new episodes filmed is 'way bigger than Season 1, not only in budget, but in terms of scope and conception.'
  • Optimistically, they want to debut the new season in 2027. But don't hold Ramos to that—he outright admitted, 'cannot promise anything.'

Big Plans; Even Bigger Headaches

Ramos didn’t dance around the biggest challenge: Season 2 has a lot more on its plate. In his words:

'We need to figure out how we deliver on everything that is expected to be delivered in Season 2, while yet being able to continue with it for a potential Season 3.'

Translation: they’re building toward something even larger, and aren’t ruling out a Season 3—assuming they can pull off a sophomore round that matches (or outmatches) the first.

Quick Primer: What Makes The Eternaut Tick?

The show’s got more going for it than your standard 'misfit group tries not to die' plot. Here’s why people got hooked:

  • Lead: Ricardo Darín plays Juan Salvo, your average guy thrown way out of his depth as the de facto leader of the survivors. He carries the series and, no surprise for anyone who’s seen him in Argentina, 1985 or The Secret in Their Eyes, absolutely nails it.
  • First season set-up: The deadly snowstorm isn't the main event—it’s just the first move by an outside force intent on wiping out humanity, which gets unpacked more as the season spirals into deeper, stranger territory.
  • Built for more: Season 1 ends with the kind of set-up that screams for continuation, and it sounds like Netflix and the creative team are clearly thinking long game here.

Bottom Line

The Eternaut is definitely coming back; it’s just not coming back soon. The creative team is angling for bigger and crazier, which is great news if you loved the first round—but also means we’ll likely be waiting until at least 2027 before Season 2 actually lands on Netflix. Nothing’s shot yet, lots of technical prep is in progress, and while the ambition is reassuring, don’t be surprised if there are more delays. In other words: add to your watchlist and try not to forget about it before the second season finally snows in.
