Mortal Kombat II is slicing into U.S. theaters, and director Simon McQuoid is already eyeing a fatal follow-up—teasing that the fight never really stops for the big-screen saga born from Ed Boon and John Tobias’ iconic game.

If you thought Mortal Kombat was going to slow down after all the blood-soaked chaos in Mortal Kombat II, think again. Director Simon McQuoid is already dropping hints about Mortal Kombat 3—yes, before the latest round of heads and limbs have even cooled in theaters.

So, Mortal Kombat III Is Happening?

Yep, it sounds like the team at Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema isn’t letting this tournament end any time soon. The green light for a Mortal Kombat III script went out back in October 2025 at New York Comic-Con, tasking writer Jeremy Slater to start wrangling more mayhem for the franchise. Kind of wild that they’re already talking sequels with Mortal Kombat II just dropping in the US, but I suppose you can never have too much spine-ripping action if the fans keep showing up.

Director Simon McQuoid Hints—But No Spoilers Yet

McQuoid spoke to Entertainment Weekly about what comes next, but don’t expect any big bombshells about Mortal Kombat II itself, since the interview actually took place before the movie’s premiere. Here’s what he told them, setting expectations and showing some nerves about rolling out a new chapter:

'We knew how we were ending this film [Mortal Kombat II]. You don't want to be overly confident. I never want to be cocky about how anything's going to land or play. You think about it, and you theorize it. So I guess I'm still in that mode where it hasn't even come out yet. Ask me after May 8.'

Clearly, he’s not counting his fatalities before they’re executed. But here’s the more interesting part: McQuoid says digging into Mortal Kombat’s huge cast of characters is both a headache and a playground, since the potential storylines basically never run out—

'There's so much to draw from, and that's both overwhelming and really exciting. There's always a "What about that character?" It never really stops.'

Where Are We Now in Mortal Kombat?

If you need a quick refresher: Mortal Kombat II (the movie, not the old-school game) just landed in theaters, with McQuoid still in the director’s chair. And yes, this round introduces Karl Urban flexing as Johnny Cage and Adeline Rudolph swinging into action as Kitana, alongside some other game-to-screen faces. The official summary lays it out like this:

  • Earthrealm’s champions—now with Johnny Cage in the mix—are locked in a gruesome, no-limits showdown.
  • The big threat? Shao Kahn’s going for total domination, not great news for anyone looking to keep their realm, or organs, intact.

What We Don’t Know Yet

No release date for Mortal Kombat 3, so don’t go putting anything on your calendar yet. But the sequel chatter is real, and with that many game characters to pull from, this series might outlive us all—provided people don’t get tired of gallons of digital blood. Color me curious to see which fan favorites (or deep cuts) they drag into battle next round.
