Mortal Kombat 2 stumbled out of the gate, debuting to an estimated $63 million worldwide—falling short of early expectations despite a competitive domestic showing. The sequel was outpaced in several markets by The Devil Wears Prada 2, which held the box office lead.

Pretty much everyone expected a big weekend for Mortal Kombat 2. The original film did well enough to justify a sequel, the fanbase is loud, and the marketing blitz didn’t let up. But the sequel’s global box office debut? Let’s just say it landed with more of a thud than a flawless victory.

The Numbers: Not Quite a Fatality, But Not Great Either

Here’s the breakdown: Mortal Kombat 2 opened to about $63 million worldwide in its first weekend. Of that, $40 million came from North America and the other $23 million trickled in from international markets. For context, this thing reportedly cost around $80 million just to shoot (and marketing costs aren’t even factored in yet).

Studios were dreaming of a $70–80 million opening worldwide, and this obviously falls short. The current thinking in box office-land is that, if nothing miraculous happens, the film might limp across the finish line with a total around $130 million worldwide. That would probably cover expenses—maybe—but it’s definitely not a slam-dunk signal for a third movie.

What Happened?

Honestly, there was a lot working against Mortal Kombat 2 this weekend—especially when it comes to international audiences. If you’re sitting in the US, things didn’t look so bad: the film basically tied with The Devil Wears Prada 2 for a top spot domestically, and audiences actually seemed to like it, at least according to the numbers:

  • Rotten Tomatoes critics: 65% (not terrible, not amazing)
  • Rotten Tomatoes audience: 90% (high, so the fan crowd was happy)

Outside the US though, those numbers didn’t translate. The overseas launch was soft, likely because The Devil Wears Prada 2 is still on a tear in several international markets. Add in competition from heavyweights like Michael (still strong in its third week), The Sheep Detectives, and even Billie Eilish’s concert tour film, and the “game over” vibes start to make sense.

The Cast & Crew

If you’re curious, Simon McQuoid returned to direct, and a bunch of familiar faces came back for round two: Lewis Tan, Hiroyuki Sanada, Jessica McNamee, and Josh Lawson. The big addition this time is Karl Urban as Johnny Cage (yes, he’s everywhere lately), along with Tati Gabrielle and Adeline Rudolph.

Will There Be Another Sequel?

Mortal Kombat 2 didn’t flop, but it also didn’t deliver the kind of numbers that guarantee a franchise’s future. All eyes are now on how fast it drops in the coming weeks. If it manages to hang on domestically and picks up some momentum overseas, maybe the studio will roll the dice on a third film. But right now, that’s far from a sure thing.

'The movie did what it could at home, but the international audience just didn’t show up the way Warner Bros. hoped.'

So, if you were expecting Mortal Kombat to deliver a box office knockout, well…maybe catch it while you can, because no one’s promising a trilogy just yet.
