With the 6666 spinoff looking doubtful, a familiar face from the Yellowstone franchise is back in the saddle for Marshals season 2.
One of Yellowstone's most recognisable faces is making his way back to the saddle, though not in the way that was originally teased. Jimmy Hurdstrom, played by Jefferson White, is officially returning for the upcoming second season of Marshals on CBS. This latest update will no doubt get the Yellowstone fandom chattering – whether they wanted Jimmy back or not is another matter entirely.

Jimmy's Back, but Not in Texas
Let’s untangle the road Jimmy was meant to travel, because it's been a bit of a state. After his story arc gave him a one-way ticket to the 6666 Ranch in Texas, everyone assumed we’d be getting a full spinoff set there. But about that…
Creator Taylor Sheridan recently shut that whole idea down. He’s not keen on using the real-life 6666 Ranch – part-owned by himself – as the backdrop for a made-up drama, saying he'd “never fictionalise that ranch” and doesn't want “to be inventing a drama” at a functioning workplace. So much for the great Jimmy-in-Texas series.
Marshals: Season 2 Cast and Connections
Now we’ve got Jimmy turning up in Marshals instead, which finds Luke Grimes back as Kayce Dutton, teaming up with U.S. Marshals in Montana. It’s not Yellowstone proper, but it keeps dipping back into the same pool. Here’s who’s in for season 2:

Jimmy’s return isn’t just fan service. According to CBS, he’s still 'a good-hearted yet rough-around-the-edges ranch hand' who’s come a long way from being a ne’er-do-well, now earning his place as a proper cowboy. White himself seems chuffed to be jumping back in:

The cast and crew are stacked full of my favorite actors and filmmakers, and I’m honored to join them. Jimmy and I have been through a lot together, and I can’t wait to see what’s next for us.'
Not Everyone’s Impressed
Our own site’s Alex Maidy wasn’t exactly over the moon with Marshals’ first season, pointing out that it borrows heavily from its Yellowstone DNA, but doesn’t deliver much in return for dedicated fans. Production values are flashy, sure, but Maidy reckons the show is more CBS crime-of-the-week fare than genuine Yellowstone-style storytelling. The upshot: CBS brand procedural, not the soul of the Dutton story.
Like it or not, Jimmy's return is locked in for series two of Marshals, debuting on CBS this autumn.
