Iain Armitage played Sheldon for seven years and is keeping his distance from the spin-off - the showrunner says he will come back
A Big Bang Theory spin-off looks to be angling for another crossover, as its showrunner teases a possible return for the actor behind Sheldon — but nothing’s confirmed.
If you were hoping for another Big Bang Theory universe crossover, there might just be something brewing behind the scenes — though it’s not quite locked in yet. Over on Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage (that’s the spin-off that picks up after Young Sheldon wrapped up in 2024), talk has turned to a possible return for Iain Armitage, the lad who played Sheldon himself for seven years. He’s not popped up on the new show, but it sounds like that might change.
What’s Actually Going On?
Steve Holland, who’s running the show, has broken cover and admitted he’s still in regular contact with Armitage — it’s not for lack of trying on the show’s part that Sheldon hasn’t strolled into a scene. In an interview, Holland explained that bringing old cast members over from Young Sheldon is always up for debate, so long as it makes sense for the story. But when it comes to Armitage, things are a bit more complicated.

According to Holland, Armitage is taking a breather from the whole Sheldon routine. Here’s how the showrunner put it when talking to Entertainment Weekly:
"I think he is trying to give himself a little distance from it. I think at some point he'll come back."
Still, Holland made it clear the door’s wide open, pointing out that the relationship between Armitage and the rest of the cast is genuinely strong. If you were in any doubt about the general mood, Holland was quick to say, 'there is a ton of love' between the actor, the whole cast, and everyone making the show. He also wouldn’t mind a brief reunion himself, mentioning how much fun it would be to have Armitage on set for a week.
Other Familiar Faces?
Holland didn’t just stop at Armitage — he’s also keen to see Ed Begley Jr. and Wallace Shawn back if it can be managed. The issue there is, both of their characters are more tied to Sheldon’s orbit than Georgie’s, so it’s a tougher ask pulling them into the current storyline in a way that doesn’t feel forced.
