Missed him? Rupert Grint returns as Ron Weasley in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child
Fifteen years after last playing Ron Weasley, Rupert Grint is set to return — and there’s a very familiar title behind it.
Brace yourselves, Potterheads: Rupert Grint is heading back to Hogwarts – or at least, the closest thing you get to it on Broadway. In a move that’s genuinely a bit surreal, Grint’s dusting off the Ron Weasley ginger mop for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on stage. Yes, the actual bloke from the films.
Ron Weasley has been a part of me since I was 11 years old and I can’t wait to meet him again in this stage of life. There is something so full-circle and so special about stepping back into Ron’s shoes now when we are both fathers; it is somehow both very familiar and completely new. And the joy of being back on Broadway, this time in a role that defined so much of my life is truly exciting.
The play’s set up nineteen years after the Deathly Hallows books finish, with Harry’s son (Albus) palling around with Draco Malfoy’s boy, and – as you’d expect with anything in this wizarding universe – all sorts of chaos splinters out from there, including a spot of time-travel.
The first time I saw Cursed Child onstage. I was blown away and I can’t wait to set foot back on Platform 9 ¾ and pick up where I left off. I am overjoyed to join this exceptional cast and crew at the Lyric Theatre this winter.
So when can you catch Grint waving a wand and doing that classic Ron Weasley gawp? He’s booked in at the Lyric Theatre on Broadway from 2 February to 30 May 2027. Just don’t get your hopes up for a Ron and Draco scene, because Tom Felton (who’s currently on as Draco Malfoy, if you missed that bit of trivia) leaves the show on 3 January, just before Grint rocks up. Considering those two had some of the best spats in the films, that’s a bit of a missed trick if you ask me.

The Movie That Never Was
Inevitably, whenever something like this hits the news, rumours resurface about a Cursed Child film. The chance of that actually happening remains slim – not just because of the ongoing tensions with JK Rowling, but Daniel Radcliffe’s more or less made it clear he’s not interested. In his own words, coming back as Harry Potter ‘isn’t something I’m really interested in doing.’ His logic was that it’s nice being able to enjoy Harry Potter from the outside these days, without it taking over his life again. Sorry, studio execs and fan campaigners alike.
