Dust off the theme tune — Disney’s rebooting Glee after 11 years
One of the previous decade’s biggest shows — the weekly toe‑tapper you couldn’t ignore — is reportedly gearing up for a comeback.
The 2010s absolutely spoiled us for TV—that period churned out hits you could barely keep up with. Sandwiched between globe-conquering dramas like Game of Thrones and the scientific sitcom behemoth The Big Bang Theory, you got Glee, Ryan Murphy’s gloriously over-the-top high school musical drama that somehow made show choir cool (well, at least on TV).
If you missed it at the time: Glee dropped in 2009 and ran a marathon—six years, 121 episodes. The show followed Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison), a Spanish teacher determined to drag the school’s moribund choir out of obscurity. Cue a revolving door of troubled but talented teens, show-stopping numbers every week, and more surprise celebrity cameos than the average season of Doctor Who. It managed to pull in a wild average of 8 million-plus viewers weekly for its first four years—proper mainstream telly.
Glee ran for 121 episodes between 2009 and 2015, averaging over 8 million viewers per week in its first four seasons.
Ever since the curtain dropped in 2015, there’s been endless muttering about a possible reboot. Not surprising, seeing as every semi-successful show from that era seems to get another go round eventually. This time, though, it’s actually happening.
Reboot Details—What’s Actually Confirmed?
Variety’s got the scoop: Disney+ and Hulu have officially ordered a fresh take on Glee. No full plot, cast list, or air date just yet—honestly, they’re playing it all rather close to the chest. But both platforms are involved, and Disney clearly thinks there’s enough nostalgia to get bums on streaming seats.
The interesting bit—there are already strong hints that several original cast members are coming back in some capacity. That doesn’t guarantee a full classroom reunion, but it does make the prospect less of a random cash-in and more like a proper homecoming (for better or worse, depending on your feelings about Glee’s later years).
Ryan Murphy’s Involvement
As for Ryan Murphy himself, he’s not just lurking in the background. He recently told Entertainment Tonight he’s spoken to roughly ten of the original cast about returning, and—here’s the crucial bit—he’s actually put pen to paper on a reboot script.
Asked how real the reboot talk was, Murphy told ET he had "been in touch with around 10 of the original cast members" and had written a new script for the reboot.
You’d expect more details (and probably a bit of drama) to surface as the project moves forward. For now, though, we’ve got confirmation of the reboot, streaming platforms involved, Murphy scripting, and the likelihood of some familiar musical faces signing on.
