About time — three years later, there’s a clear answer on Mckenna Grace missing Young Sheldon’s ending
Three years on, Jessica Radloff’s new behind-the-scenes book finally lifts the lid on why Mckenna Grace missed Young Sheldon’s farewell — and it’s not what you expected.
Here's a bit of telly gossip that's been floating around for a while, and now at last we've got a straight answer: Mckenna Grace didn't pop up in the final season of Young Sheldon, and it had nothing to do with creative choices or any murky on-set drama—unless you count squabbles with agents as drama, which, to be fair, can be just as messy.
Young Sheldon’s last season was chopped to 14 episodes because of the Hollywood strikes in 2023.
The whole situation finally came out thanks to Jessica Radloff's new behind-the-scenes book, where she spills just what went sideways between the show's writers, producers, and Mckenna Grace's people. If you were waiting on some emotional on-screen goodbye for Paige Swanson, that was never on the cards after things in season 6 got a bit heated over schedules.
The Missed Episode Fiasco
Here's how it played out: during Young Sheldon season 6, Mckenna's team started talks about her timetable, leading the writers to craft not one, but two Paige-centric episodes. Then — classic production headaches — another project came calling for Grace at the exact same time she was meant to film that second episode for Sheldon. According to Radloff, this wasn't just a casual calendar clash; it turned into a full-blown disagreement with her agents.
As Radloff lays it out in her interview:
"The problem was is that she'd already committed to the second episode. The writers already wrote the episode."
Things didn't get any smoother from there. Producers and Grace's agents butted heads, and the friction was enough that Mckenna had to pull out from her other project in order to keep her promise to Young Sheldon. All fine in the end for that year, but the producers weren't keen to risk another episode rewrite or last-minute scramble—especially not for the show's swan song.
Shortened Season, Fewer Chances
Then came the 2023 Hollywood strikes, which took a scythe to TV schedules everywhere and whittled Young Sheldon's final run down to just 14 episodes. With the show's timeline slashed, writers were forced to bin whole storylines—and unfortunately, that meant any plan to bring back Paige (and, by extension, Mckenna Grace) got binned as well. It simply wasn't feasible to build everything around making her one last appearance in a squeeze like that.
Radloff makes a point in the book: it wasn't about grudges or creative differences. Producers apparently left word that they "love Mckenna" and wish things had played out differently. Plus, in case you're wondering, she and Raegan Revord (Missy) are still good mates off-camera. Mckenna's last moment on the show saw Paige and Missy making a break for it together before getting picked up by the police, which, in a way, is about as Paige as endings come.
No need to worry about Grace's career, either—she's still stacking up high-profile gigs. She'll be leading in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping from 20 November 2026, and she's got a Netflix starring role lined up for Scooby-Doo: Origins in 2027. Busy as ever, even if Young Sheldon had to bow out without her.
