The Netflix star who played Bill Tench just landed another hard-nosed role—same steely energy, new hunt.

Right, so Holt McCallany – the bloke who’s long been one of David Fincher’s go-to chaps and quietly nicks every scene he’s in – is about to get top billing in a new film that sounds rather up his street. If you know him from Mindhunter (and frankly, that’s the one most people wish had gone on longer), or spotted him popping up everywhere from Nightmare Alley to The Iron Claw, you’ll get the general idea: the guy can do grim, haunted, or just quietly menacing, take your pick.

What's Hyde All About?

McCallany’s latest? A noir-tinged thriller called Hyde, directed by Graham and Parker Phillips – that’s the sibling duo, with Parker probably ringing a bell if you caught Rumble Through the Dark. Descriptions of Hyde, if you squint a bit, do reek of Mindhunter in a new coat of paint, so it’s no shock the project’s already got people talking. Production has only just kicked off in Bucharest, Romania – if you’re into moody European cityscapes and dodgy stairwells, you’re in luck.

The Cast and Their Parts

  • Holt McCallany takes centre-stage as Detective Grimes, a man ‘haunted’ (of course) and trudging through the decrepit streets of some unnamed metropolis while tracking a nasty serial killer.
  • Nathalie Emmanuel (yep, Game of Thrones alumni) is playing Detective Doran, who’s shadowing Grimes on this psychological merry-go-round.
  • Bruce Greenwood – you might have watched him recently in Mike Flanagan’s The Fall of the House of Usher – is set to play Henry Monroe, Grimes’s mandated therapist. In other words, he’ll be prodding at those inner demons.
  • David Harewood of Homeland fame is Robert Malloy, a police lieutenant trying vainly to hold his department together, and, well, drag Grimes back from the brink.

If you’ve missed McCallany’s steady hand in dark, procedural waters, this looks bang on the money. Hyde is leaning right into the ‘tortured detective faces killer’ territory, which is pretty much catnip for anyone still not over the end of Mindhunter.

A Word from the Directors

The Phillips brothers (they’re directing and writing this one) put out a proper ‘production’s started’ statement, making it sound all terribly collaborative:

'We’re thrilled to be working with such intelligent and collaborative actors. Everyone arrived with bold ideas, strong instincts, and a real willingness to explore and take risks, all against the backdrop of Bucharest, whose architecture and atmosphere feel tailor-made for this twisted tale.'

(And I’ll say, if you’re after a city with crumbling grandeur for your serial killer yarn, Bucharest’s probably the right pick.)

McCallany’s Other Projects

In addition to Hyde, McCallany’s not exactly taking a break – he’s lined up for two more films releasing this year. The headline-stealer is The Adventures of Cliff Booth, David Fincher’s unexpected Netflix sequel to Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood. If that sounds like a mad crossover, you’re not wrong.
