Shrek isn’t stopping at five: Dana Carvey says Mike Myers has already confirmed Shrek 6 is in development, even before next year’s Shrek 5 arrives.

If you thought we'd finally seen the last of Shrek and his merry band of weirdos, well, not so fast. The big, green ogre and his swamp have never been busier — and judging by the latest rumblings in the animation world, that swamp is about to get even more crowded. After lying dormant for ages, the Shrek franchise is coming back in a big way, with not just one, but potentially three new projects chugging down the DreamWorks production line.

The Massive Shrek Revival: What's Happening?

Let’s break it down. Shrek 5 – yes, fifth in the sequence of, frankly, occasionally questionable decisions – is officially in the works and set to hit cinemas on 30 June 2027. This is the first proper sequel in the main Shrek run since 2010, so yes, time marches on even in Far Far Away. And as if DreamWorks wasn’t busy enough, Eddie Murphy has very casually let it slip he’s getting a Donkey solo film (due out in 2028). Because apparently there’s no such thing as too much Donkey.

A Little Slip, A Big Hint

Now, here’s where it gets a bit cheeky: Dana Carvey (you know, Garth from Wayne’s World — and, more to the point, someone who chats with Mike Myers on the regular) dropped a bit of a bombshell on his podcast. According to Carvey, Mike Myers told him in no uncertain terms:

"We're doing two more."

That’s after Shrek 5, mind. Do the maths, and it sounds like Shrek 6 is already on the DreamWorks whiteboard, even if no official press release has dropped yet. Carvey’s not usually one for outright fibbing, so it’s got a fair bit of credibility.

Back in the Swamp: Who’s Coming Back?

Shrek 5 sees the return of the classic line-up: Mike Myers as Shrek, Eddie Murphy as Donkey, and Cameron Diaz as Fiona. So if you were worried about a half-baked reboot with "edgy" new voices, rest easy…for now. That said, the studio’s been teasing some fresh faces for this next one, though they’re keeping the details under wraps.

A Franchise That Just Won’t Die

None of this should be overly shocking. The Shrek films have raked in nearly $4 billion globally across its various outings. The franchise basically printed money after the first film in 2001, riding the wave with three more direct sequels and a pair of spin-offs about that sword-swinging cat. The last big success, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, proved in 2022 that there’s still loads of appetites for fairy tale parody and gently risqué gags — it nearly hit $484 million at the box office from a budget somewhere between $90 and $110 million.

What’s Actually Happening in Shrek 5?

Plot details are being kept suspiciously secret, which usually means either something big is afoot or they just don’t want to tip off the memes yet. The word is, though, that this fifth film is some kind of "reinvention" for the franchise (DreamWorks’ Michael McCullers hinted at it in earlier interviews). New cast members are rumoured to be on board, and early looks have already caused a bit of a stir amongst fans. The likely scenario? Shrek and Fiona, now with teenage ogre triplets, dealing with magical chaos in Far Far Away. If you're not prepared for moody adolescent ogres, I don’t know what to tell you.

A Donkey Spin-Off – Like We Needed More of That Energy

As if Shrek 5 and a possible sixth film weren’t enough, Eddie Murphy confirmed he’s headed for his own star turn. He’ll be leading a full-on Donkey spin-off. Expect plenty of loud-mouthed banter and, presumably, more interspecies domestic adventures (Donkey's dragon wife and their offspring apparently feature heavily).

  • Shrek 5 – 30 June 2027: Main cast back, plot focus on Shrek and Fiona parenting teen ogres, some new characters joining the party.
  • Donkey Movie – 2028: Eddie Murphy front and centre; more Donkey, more dragon-family chaos.
  • Rumoured Shrek 6: Mike Myers apparently says it’s happening, but the studio’s keeping schtum officially for now.

All of this comes on the back of the franchise’s near-indestructible legacy — the audience clearly isn’t done, and neither (it seems) is DreamWorks. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish gave them a solid reason to fire up the franchise engine yet again, and now there’s a clear roadmap stretching at least to 2028.
