Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is sailing under lock and key, with only a few casting clues escaping. From trusted collaborators to bold wild cards, here are the names most likely to board his epic.

Christopher Nolan has officially entered his 'Greek myth epic' era, and honestly, the hype machine is already overheating. 'The Odyssey,' his big post-'Oppenheimer' project, doesn’t even hit theaters until July 2026, but people are snapping up IMAX 70mm seats like it's a Taylor Swift tour (or, well, a Nolan movie—same vibe these days).

For any non-Homer nerds out there, 'The Odyssey' is basically the original 'guy just trying to get home' saga, complete with monsters, gods, bad decisions, a stubborn wife, and a son waiting for his dad to finally show up. It’s been rattling around Western culture for thousands of years, so no pressure, Christopher.

The Big Players (Official Cast List So Far):

  • Matt Damon as Odysseus
Damon lands the role of Odysseus himself—the famously tricky King of Ithaca, war hero, mastermind of the Trojan Horse, and someone who routinely gets in his own way thanks to that classic hero arrogance. Damon usually doesn’t venture out of contemporary stories, but anybody who saw 'The Last Duel' knows he has no issue throwing on a tunic and sword.
  • Tom Holland as Telemachus
Holland is taking a break from swinging around New York to play Odysseus’s son—the classic 'earnest hero stuck in his dad’s legendary shadow' part. Holland’s charm and earnestness pretty much align with Telemachus, and considering his box office outside of Spider-Man is…let’s say, still developing, this role could be a make-or-break moment for him.
  • Charlize Theron as Calypso
Ignore the early rumors—Theron is not the witchy Circe. She’s Calypso, as confirmed by the most recent trailer. For those who skipped high school English, Calypso is the demi-goddess who keeps Odysseus as her reluctant boy-toy on her island for seven years. The trailer even opens with her monologue, so she’s definitely not just a cameo.
  • Anne Hathaway as Penelope
Nolan’s clearly sticking with what works, bringing Hathaway back as Odysseus’s wife, Penelope. Her whole thing? Outwitting sleazy suitors who want the throne, mostly by stalling them with a never-ending funeral shroud. Hathaway’s got the range for stoic chessmaster, and the trailer gives her plenty of emotional weight.
  • Robert Pattinson as Antinous
Pattinson goes full villain as Antinous, the ringleader of Penelope’s would-be husbands. He’s already worked with Nolan on 'Tenet,' so consider him pre-approved for wild-eyed plotting and slicked-back hair.
  • Benny Safdie as Agamemnon
Yes, Agamemnon is dead in this story, but Nolan found room for him anyway (flashbacks or ghostly cameos, probably). Safdie’s on a roll as bitingly sad tragic figures, and after 'Oppenheimer,' he clearly clicked with Nolan.
  • Zendaya as Athena
Athena, the brains behind Odysseus’s luck, is played by Zendaya. If her role is more 'advising from the heavens' than 'front and center,' it’s still a big spot for the actress who’s always in high demand.
  • John Leguizamo as Eumaeus
Leguizamo steps into the shoes of the loyal swineherd who actually believes Odysseus will make it back someday. With Leguizamo’s mix of warmth and wry character work, it’s smart casting.
  • Jon Bernthal as Menelaus
Bernthal (you’ve seen him, you know the drill—punches first, broods later) plays Menelaus, King of Sparta and one of the major Greek players who set the Trojan War in motion. Perfect supporting muscle.
  • Mia Goth as Melantho
The internet’s favorite new scream queen, Mia Goth, turns in a supporting role as Melantho, one of Penelope’s maids who sides with the suitors. Minor part? Maybe. Still a fun bit of casting and a chance for Goth to channel serious snark.

'Wait—who else is in this thing?'

The list of actors confirmed to be in the mix—even if we don’t know who they’re playing—reads like a grab-bag of cool character actors and left-field picks. Expect to see: Elliot Page, Himesh Patel, Josh Stewart, Ryan Hurst, Travis Scott (yes, that Travis Scott), James Remar, Jovan Adepo, Jesse Garcia, Rafi Gavron, Shiloh Fernandez, Jimmy Gonzales, Michael Vlamis, Iddo Goldberg, and Anthony Molinari. There’s probably a god or monster or three in there somewhere.

Quick Timeline Recap

Universal confirmed everything after the May 4, 2026 trailer dropped, but the buzz started way back when Nolan first announced the project post-'Oppenheimer.' Tickets for certain formats sold out faster than most festival lineups, which is wild for a literary adaptation based on a 3,000-year-old poem—though, with Nolan, nothing ever really fits the usual box-office logic.

If you’re expecting a paint-by-numbers sword-and-sandals flick, prepare to recalibrate: Nolan is likely to turn this 3,000-year-old story into a slick, visually bonkers myth with a 21st-century sheen, Oscar-bait performances, and at least one truly odd creative decision we’ll all be arguing about until awards season ends.

Or, as one studio exec apparently said (with dollar signs in their eyes):
'Nobody packs IMAX seats for a Bronze Age epic except Christopher Nolan.'
