MCU's X-Men Reboot Nabs Beef and The Bear Breakouts
After months of radio silence, Marvel’s X-Men reboot finally lands its writers, as director Jake Schreier reveals The Bear showrunner Joanna Calo and Beef creator Lee Sung Jin are on board.
Well, it looks like we finally have some actual news (not just Twitter rumors or vague executive promises) about Marvel's X-Men reboot. After months, maybe years, of Marvel acting like they forgot they even bought the X-Men, there’s finally a team of writers getting to work on the new movie. And if you’ve been watching 'Beef' or 'The Bear', you’re probably going to have opinions.
Who's Actually Writing the New X-Men?
During a chat about 'Beef' Season 2, director Jake Schreier (who’s going to direct the X-Men reboot AND Marvel's upcoming 'Thunderbolts*') let it slip who’s currently tackling the script:
- Joanna Calo ('The Bear' showrunner, as in the show where everyone yells about sandwich shops)
- Lee Sung Jin (created 'Beef', which is easily one of the best-written Netflix shows in ages)
Schreier says it’s weirdly fitting to get Calo and Lee back together, since the three of them worked as a team during 'Beef' Season 1 AND they're already in the Marvel ecosystem thanks to 'Thunderbolts*'.
What Did Schreier Actually Say?
Here’s Schreier’s actual quote, because it’s interesting enough on its own:
'One of the exciting things that’s tying into Beef is that Sonny [Lee Sung Jin] and Joanna [Calo] both worked on this season. Obviously, I mean, Beef is Sonny's show, and Joanna worked on the season as well, and we worked together on Season 1 of Beef and on Thunderbolts*. They have come in and are working on a draft right now, which is really exciting to be able to put that group of people together again.'
Translation: Marvel is doubling down on that vibe-heavy, character-messy energy both those shows are known for.
Schreier even called 'Beef' and 'The Bear' 'two of the most interesting shows on television right now.' He basically implied that X-Men needs writers who deeply get both the ideological parts of those comics and the over-the-top drama—saying the comics are kind of like 'soap operas' with superhero fights. Which, honestly, is true.
But Seriously, That’s... It?
As of now, all Marvel has given us is this writers’ team—no word on which mutants are even showing up, much less who’s going to play them. The whole casting situation is still a mystery, and they're being equally tight-lipped about when this thing might actually hit theaters. If there’s a timeline, Marvel is keeping it on a USB drive guarded by Deadpool.
So, to sum up: The X-Men reboot finally has some writers with real TV cred and Marvel already trusts them for another major movie. It's a promising team, but until we get any casting or release date news, the wait continues. At least there's a pulse.
