Masters of the Universe is already flexing its power before release, with Amazon’s jaw-dropping He-Man drone spectacle now certified by Guinness World Records as the brightest drone show ever.

Well, here’s something you don’t get to say every day: the new Masters of the Universe film has already broken a world record, ages before anyone’s actually seen the movie. Yes, you read that right – He-Man and his mates have managed to make headlines by lighting up the sky over Los Angeles in a way that’s frankly difficult to ignore.

1,600 Drones and a Guinness World Record

In a move that feels straight out of a PR fever dream, Amazon went all-out to promote their upcoming Masters of the Universe film with a drone show that’s officially the brightest of all time. On 19th May 2026, a whopping 1,600 drones took off into the LA night, forming elaborate shapes and no doubt terrifying several pets in the process. The spectacle was so over-the-top that Guinness World Records had to get involved (as they tend to do), and have now declared it the ‘brightest drone show ever’.

Not your typical bit of film marketing, is it? But then again, if you’re rebooting something as gloriously overblown as Masters of the Universe, you might as well commit to the bit.

The Team Bringing Eternia Back

Now, onto who’s actually behind all this. The film’s being directed by Travis Knight, who’s got real pedigree on this sort of thing thanks to The Boxtrolls, Kubo and the Two Strings, and Bumblebee. He’s not exactly known for half-measures, so expectations are high.

Producing duties are handled by Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Robbie Brenner, and DeVon Franklin – all seasoned enough to know what they’re doing with a blockbuster of this scale.

Who’s Who in Eternia

Here’s the main cast (strap in, it’s a list and a half):

  • Nicholas Galitzine as Adam Glenn, aka He-Man himself
  • Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn (very on-brand casting, honestly)
  • James Purefoy as King Randor
  • Morena Baccarin as the Sorceress
  • Camila Mendes as Teela
  • Idris Elba as Duncan, better known as Man-at-Arms
  • Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson as Goat Man – yes, really
  • Sam C Wilson as Kronis/Trap Jaw
  • Kristen Wiig voicing Roboto
  • And, for a real curveball, Jared Leto as Skeletor – He-Man’s big bad

Honestly, that’s an ensemble that’s either going to be brilliant, or absolutely mental. Could go either way, and I’m a bit here for it.

Plot: Swords, Nostalgia, and a Lot of Shirts Left Unbuttoned

The official synopsis doesn’t mess about: after being separated from his home for 15 years, Prince Adam gets lured back to Eternia by the legendary Sword of Power. He finds everything in ruins thanks to Skeletor, and has to team up with his mates Teela and Man-at-Arms (as you do) to save his family, his planet, and maybe the whole universe. If you’re expecting subtlety, you’re watching the wrong movie.

'To save his family and his world, Adam must join forces with his closest allies, Teela and Duncan/Man-At-Arms, and embrace his true destiny as He-Man — the most powerful man in the universe.'

So yes, expect some proper epic scale melodrama and, if you’re anything like me, a fair bit of glorious Eighties cheese updated for 2026.

Production & Release (and a Bit of Trivia)

For the completists: filming was done in London, running from January to June last year (2025, for those counting). Before its proper wide release, they gave it the Hollywood treatment with a premiere at the TCL Chinese Theatre on 18th May 2026.

The big US release is set for 5th June 2026. If you’re the sort who likes big, daft blockbusters with a lovingly over-the-top approach to both storytelling and advertising, this one’s definitely going on your watchlist.

If nothing else, you’ve got to respect a film that sets records before the curtains have even gone up.
