Some familiar faces from the Marvel universe have confirmed they won’t be returning for the star-studded 'Avengers: Doomsday', leaving fans speculating about the film’s ever-expanding cast.

Despite the fanfare surrounding the upcoming 'Avengers: Doomsday', not every Marvel alumnus is set to make a comeback. The film, which boasts a staggering ensemble of talent—think Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Vanessa Kirby, Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh, Letitia Wright, David Harbour, Patrick Stewart, Alan Cumming, James Marsden, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Paul Rudd, Rebecca Romijn, and Pedro Pascal—has left some notable absences. While the rumour mill has been churning since the record-breaking cast reveal, Idris Elba, Wunmi Mosaku, and Martin Freeman have each made it clear they won’t be donning their Marvel personas this time round.

The trio addressed the speculation during a recent appearance on The Graham Norton Show. When the host cheekily inquired, “Are any of you in the new fancy one, that everyone's in?” Martin Freeman responded with a wry, “Apparently not, not everyone...” Norton, quick to correct himself, quipped, “That most people are in!” Mosaku, who last appeared as the TVA’s Hunter B-15 in 'Deadpool & Wolverine', shot back, “Rude!” Idris Elba, meanwhile, reminded viewers that his character Heimdall met a rather definitive end at the hands of Thanos in 'Avengers: Infinity War' back in 2018.

Multiverse Maybes and Marvel Absentees

Of course, with 'Doomsday' set against the backdrop of Marvel’s ever-twisting multiverse, the door is technically open for all manner of returns—variants, doppelgängers, and the like. Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, for instance, has already demonstrated that a dramatic exit doesn’t always mean a permanent one. Still, Elba seemed unconvinced about Heimdall’s prospects, even in a universe where anything goes. As for Mosaku’s Hunter B-15 and Freeman’s Everett K. Ross, both last seen in Disney+ projects, their absence from the forthcoming blockbuster seems all but certain, despite the film’s seismic ambitions.

Fans have been left to wonder whether these characters might pop up in a surprise cameo, but the actors themselves appear to have closed the door for now. The Marvel machine, it seems, is moving forward with or without them, and the cast list—already bursting at the seams—shows no sign of shrinking.

Freeman’s Pragmatic Take on Marvel Futures

Martin Freeman, for his part, has always maintained a measured outlook regarding his place in the Marvel world. While promoting the Skrull-centric thriller 'Secret Invasion', he told Collider:

“I never think I've got a future in the MCU. I always assume I haven't, which is the safest M.O. I think it's the safest thing, given that I'm not one of the A-team in the MCU. I'm definitely on the subs bench. I'm a good little substitute. I can come on when needed, for about five minutes at the end of the game. I'm not assuming anything, that I have a future in the MCU. But whenever it happens, it's a lovely bonus.”

Freeman’s character, Ross, first appeared in 'Captain America: Civil War' as a government official, later popping up in both 'Black Panther' films. Since then, though, he’s been conspicuously absent from the big screen, and his comments suggest he’s not holding his breath for a call-up.

Marvel’s Expanding Universe—But Not for All

While the multiverse concept offers endless possibilities, not every character or actor is destined for a return. Elba’s Heimdall, Mosaku’s Hunter B-15, and Freeman’s Ross have all played their parts in the sprawling Marvel saga, but for now, they’re content to watch from the sidelines as 'Avengers: Doomsday' prepares to unleash its next chapter. The film’s cast may be record-breaking, but as Freeman dryly noted, “not everyone” is on the guest list.
