Marvel’s Eternals have quietly vanished from the MCU, taking with them a host of untapped characters. Among the most intriguing is Dane Whitman, whose story remains largely unexplored. Discover what made Black Knight such a missed opportunity.

As the latest chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe unfolds, one group remains conspicuously absent: the Eternals. Their quiet departure has left a trail of missed opportunities, particularly for characters who might have brought something fresh to the franchise. Dane Whitman, better known as Black Knight and portrayed by Kit Harington, stands out as a prime example of this untapped potential.

Black Knight: A Legacy Lost

Many fans were left frustrated by the way Harington’s Black Knight was handled. Despite hints at his abilities, the character never truly stepped into the spotlight,

never getting the major push that was planned for him.

While the film touched on elements of his background, the full depth of his story was left largely unexplored.

In the original comics, Whitman’s lineage stretches back to Sir Percy of Scandia, a knight of Camelot, tying him to Marvel’s take on Arthurian legend. This heritage also explains his connection to the Eternals, who have been quietly influencing humanity for centuries.

Whitman is actually the third to bear the Black Knight title, following in the footsteps of his uncle, Nathan Garrett—a villain who, in his final moments, urged Whitman to redeem their family’s name. Unlike his superhuman allies, Whitman relies on his formidable swordsmanship and sharp intellect, rather than any innate powers.

The Ebony Blade and a Missed Opportunity

Central to Whitman’s story is the Ebony Blade, a mystical weapon capable of slicing through nearly anything, deflecting energy, and absorbing magic. However, the blade carries a curse: the more it is used for violence, the greater its corrupting influence. Whitman also dons an enchanted suit of armour, crafted by elves in ages past.

Despite these fascinating elements, the MCU’s shift in direction has left Harington’s character on the sidelines. This comes on top of the

Jon Snow spin-off cancellation

from Game of Thrones, compounding the sense of missed opportunity for the actor and fans alike.

Marvel’s Handling of the Eternals

While the pandemic certainly played a part, the main reason for the Eternals’ abrupt exit seems to be Marvel Studios’ reluctance to let the story develop. The studio appeared to base its decision on box office returns, rather than allowing director Chloé Zhao’s vision to unfold over time.

Audience reactions were mixed, with some appreciating the departure from the usual formula. Few considered the film a failure; in fact, it might have been the change the franchise needed, had it been given room to grow through sequels or spin-offs.

The cast, including Kumail Nanjiani, have expressed pride in their work, suggesting that the issues lay not with the story or direction, but with the studio’s willingness to take risks.

that they did their best

and remain proud of their achievements.
