Malcolm in the Middle returns April 10, 2026—without Dewey, as Erik Per Sullivan turned down a buckets-of-money comeback, according to Jane Kaczmarek.

In the wild world of TV revivals, we've all gotten used to hearing some version of the phrase 'the entire original cast is back.' Well, not this time. When Malcolm in the Middle makes its big return in spring 2026, one key member of the chaos-loving family is sitting this one out—by choice, and for reasons that might surprise you.

Where’s Dewey?

If you grew up watching Malcolm in the Middle, you probably have a soft spot for Dewey—the pint-sized oddball with a knack for music and some of the weirdest lines in the whole series. But Erik Per Sullivan, the actor behind Dewey, has been out of the spotlight for years now. And apparently, that's exactly how he likes it.

According to Jane Kaczmarek (a.k.a. Lois, the queen of sitcom parenting), the offer to get Sullivan back for the revival was enormous. As she told The Guardian:

'They offered him buckets of money to come back, and he just said: "No thank you."'

So, what's Sullivan up to that made him turn down what most people would call lottery money? He's deep into his academic life, currently working on his master's degree at Harvard. Not a bad trade-off, to be honest.

'I Haven’t Acted Since I Was Nine'

Even Malcolm dad Bryan Cranston couldn’t lure him back. Cranston recently shared some behind-the-scenes details on the Fly on the Wall podcast—he personally reached out to Sullivan, trying to close the deal. But the answer wasn’t remotely ambiguous.

'I talked to Erik and I said, "Hey, we got the show! It’s going to come back." He goes, "Oh, that’s fantastic!" And I go, "Yeah, so we’re looking forward to having you back." He goes, "Oh, no, no, I don’t want to do it. But it’s fantastic."'

Cranston added that Sullivan hasn't acted 'since I was nine or something,' and that he's pretty happy focusing on his studies. Can't really blame the guy.

The New Face of Dewey

Since the original Dewey is off being a Harvard scholar, Malcolm in the Middle: Life's Still Unfair is bringing in some fresh casting. Caleb Ellsworth-Clark steps into the Dewey role for the special.

  • Frankie Muniz (Malcolm): Yes, he's back.
  • Bryan Cranston (Hal): Still holding it down as the world’s most lovable disaster dad.
  • Jane Kaczmarek (Lois): The glue that holds the family together (or maybe tears them apart, depending on the episode).
  • Christopher Masterson (Francis): The eldest troublemaker returns.
  • Justin Berfield (Reese): Chaos personified.
  • Caleb Ellsworth-Clark (Dewey): Taking over for Sullivan in the revival.

The four-episode miniseries finds Malcolm coming home to celebrate Hal and Lois's 40th (yes, 40th!) wedding anniversary, and most of the old gang is back in action. But, for those hoping for the original Dewey, it looks like we’re out of luck. Sullivan seems perfectly content staying as far away from Hollywood as possible these days—can't say I blame him, especially if Harvard's the backup plan.

Bottom line: Money isn't everything, and sometimes it turns out your beloved sitcom little brother prefers classic literature over rehashing childhood roles. Who knew?
