In an unlikely dream team, M. Night Shyamalan, Nicholas Sparks, and Jake Gyllenhaal join forces on a romantic thriller poised to shatter hearts and deliver a jaw-drop twist.

So here’s something I didn’t expect to be writing: M. Night Shyamalan, the guy whose name is basically synonymous with plot twists and creepy supernatural stuff, is teaming up with Nicholas Sparks, the undisputed king of weepy romance, for a movie called 'Remain.' Yeah, that Nicholas Sparks—the guy whose books your mom probably cried over at least once. And no, this isn’t just Shyamalan adapting a Sparks novel or vice versa. They both created the story together, and each is telling it in their own medium—Shyamalan through film, Sparks through an actual novel dropping in 2025. If that sounds convoluted, it kinda is, but it’s also weirdly fascinating.

What Remain Is Actually About

The movie centers on Jake Gyllenhaal (he of 'can do literally any type of role') playing Tate Gordon, a withdrawn architect trying to rebuild his life in Cape Cod after his sister dies. There, he meets Wren, played by Phoebe Dynevor—yes, from 'Bridgerton,' so you can expect charisma. The setup sounds straight out of Nicholas Sparks land: lonely guy with emotional scars gets pulled out of his shell by an enigmatic woman. But don’t get too comfortable—there’s also an ominous local mystery, some family trauma, and, apparently, a supernatural thriller edge that is pure Shyamalan.

Two Masters, One Story — Sort Of

Shyamalan explained their collaboration at a recent Warner Bros. Discovery event, and, well, they really did build this from scratch. According to him, they started with questions like 'What scares you? What moves you? What stays with you?' and essentially mashed both of their sensibilities together into something that’s equal parts love story and eerie thriller. He described it this way:

'We challenged each other. We traded ideas and slowly wove two very different perspectives into a single, thrilling, supernatural love story. In the end, we get to tell it our own way. Mine through film, Nicholas through his novel. The novel is not a novelization, and the film is not an adaptation. It’s two storytellers telling the story of Remain in their own way.'

That’s a pretty wild creative setup. And for what it’s worth, Shyamalan claims 'Just between us, it’s my highest-testing movie of my career.' Considering this is the guy whose movies have been all over the map (from 'The Sixth Sense' to 'The Last Airbender'), that’s a bold statement.

The Shyamalan-Sparks Connection You Didn’t Know About

Here’s a bit of movie trivia that caught me off guard: Back in the '90s, Shyamalan was actually offered the chance to write the film version of 'The Notebook.' He turned it down so he could focus on 'The Sixth Sense'—which, let’s be honest, worked out pretty well for him. And if you thought Shyamalan had never dipped a toe in romance before, fun fact: he did some uncredited writing on 'She’s All That.'

The Cast and The Release Date (Yes, It Got Pushed)

Besides Gyllenhaal and Dynevor, the cast is surprisingly stacked for a project that's kind of flown under the radar so far. You’ll see:

  • Ashley Walters
  • Julie Hagerty
  • Jay O. Sanders
  • Tracy Ifeachor
  • Hannah James
  • Caleb Ruminer
  • Kieran Mulcare
  • Maria Dizzia

Originally, the film was expected this year, but scheduling weirdness (what else is new in Hollywood) has bumped it all the way to February 5, 2027. So we've got a bit of a wait, but apparently, post-production is where they're obsessing over every last detail.

I’ll be honest, even if you find Sparks novels a little too sappy or you think Shyamalan’s twists can be hit-and-miss, seeing these two worlds collide is just too strange to ignore. If nothing else, 'Remain' is shaping up to be one of those cross-genre experiments that could go absolutely anywhere.
