Logan star Dafne Keen says she was offered cocaine at a wrap party when she was 11
Logan’s Dafne Keen says she was offered cocaine at wrap parties as a child — and that seeing grown-ups drink and use drugs kept her off both.
Showbiz stories rarely surprise me these days, but here we are. Dafne Keen – the actress best known for playing Laura (or X-23, for Marvel anoraks) in Logan – has been talking candidly about the less glamorous side of growing up in the industry. And by that I mean adults offering an 11-year-old child cocaine at a wrap party. Not exactly what you expect on the kids' craft table, is it?
Dafne Keen began working on major film sets at just 11, where she says she was already offered cocaine by industry adults.
Refusing the 'Party' Culture
Keen, who’s now 21, chatted recently on Michael Rosenbaum’s podcast and didn’t mince words. She’s never gotten drunk, never had a hangover, and describes herself as a "control freak" when it comes to drinking – not exactly the norm when you start working in Hollywood as a tween. According to Keen, seeing adult cast and crew necking drinks and snorting coke firsthand put her right off the whole scene. While others were introducing themselves to substances, her instincts kicked in early: not for her, thanks very much.
The conversation got properly eyebrow-raising when Keen nonchalantly mentioned being offered cocaine at those infamous wrap parties, as a literal child. Rosenbaum, the host, couldn’t hide his shock – quite understandably – at the idea of drugs being passed to someone that young. Keen only joked about it. In her words, she’d been offered coke at 11 or 12 and, obviously, turned it down.
Enjoying Nights Sober
What’s refreshing is Keen doesn’t sound remotely bothered about missing out. Apparently, she loves a proper night out, stays up until six in the morning, and gets stuck in with music and dancing – all with a glass of pop in hand, not a pint. Her trick for avoiding peer pressure as a teenager? Just claim you’re already high and sip a Coke. Simple for some.
On Hugh Jackman and Logan
The chat did have some lighter moments. Keen spoke warmly about Hugh Jackman, who played her fatherly mutant counterpart in Logan. She reckons he was the ‘best on-screen dad’ and credits him with protecting her on set and making sure no one played fast and loose with child work hours or set stress. According to Keen, Jackman went above and beyond to keep things safe and fun for her, even shielding her from any production dramas that might've been brewing behind the scenes.
