Adam Driver reveals the Ben Solo movie Lucasfilm wanted — and why Disney killed it
Five years on from his exit, Adam Driver has now addressed what, if anything, lies ahead for him in 'Star Wars'.
Right, so if you ever found yourself thinking Kylo Ren got a bit of a rough send-off at the end of the sequel trilogy — you were not alone. Adam Driver’s tortured Sith-turned-hero wound up being one of the few properly interesting characters the new films served up, so it’s no wonder fans (and probably accountants) have been tempted by the idea of dragging him back for more. Thing is, that almost happened. There really was a plan for a post-trilogy comeback — but five years later, Driver’s finally confirmed the project is dead and buried, and no, Disney’s not changing its mind.
The Spinoff That Wasn't
Driver let slip the details during a stop on The Rich Eisen Show, clearing up the rumour mill for good. Turns out, after The Rise of Skywalker wrapped in 2019, he was actually keen to play around with Ben Solo again. Unusually, Lucasfilm (and even Kathleen Kennedy herself) were game — this wasn’t a case of the actor pestering for work, the creative offices were behind it.
The working title? The Hunt for Ben Solo. Apparently, they’d gone as far as getting full creative thumbs-up from Lucasfilm, which is not a given with Star Wars, for all its 'every story matters' branding. Then Disney itself stepped in and turned the lights off. Reason being: they couldn’t justify resurrecting Ben Solo (remember, he carks it properly at the end of the trilogy), and nobody at the Mouse House wanted to twist canon just for another payday. Cynics might raise an eyebrow, but that’s the official story.
Driver put it plainly on The Rich Eisen Show: "Yeah, it's over… No more Star Wars."
